A4 in a 36th Bridge or Norton
« on: August 30, 2016, 01:01:14 PM »
Anybody swapped out their A5 for an A4 in the 36th Bridge (or regular DP103), or a Norton?

Thinking about this for one of my 36th sets for a little different EQ, more vintage feel. Just wondering if it would be a straight-up swap, or if any additional changes need to be made.

Any comments?

Haven't tried that combination but yes it's a straight swap.  Neither of those pickups has the glued on magnet; generally that's only the ones with double size ceramics and set screws for pole pieces.

Thanks Ray

It's going it in an Ibanez Artstar AS120; if it works out, I'll do the same in a Gibson Explorer.

I also have not tried that exact combination but when I created my 59/Custom hybrids I used the A5 magnet from the 59 in one, ditched the ceramic from the Custom and put an A4 in the other. Since they are in different guitars I cannot give a direct comparison but my feeling is that the A4 one has a bit less bite and a bit more warmth. If that's what you are  looking for, go for it. Easy to reverse if you don't like it or want to put the pickup back to the original configuration.

I must say I noticed a bigger change when I replaced the A2 in a Custom Custom for an A5 but that was in the same guitar.

Cheers Stephan

I am curious what a 36th Anniversary would sound like with an A2....
