Many thanks for breaking that down for me! The more I keep reading the more I get torn. I’m kind of narrowing it to the Super D, the Titan, or the PAF 36th Anniversary.

I’m very used to alnico 5 pickups but would like to maybe get something with a little more output.

Hey everyone,
I've used some Duncans in the past and Dimarzios. I've tried D Activator, Crunchlab, Liquifire, and X2n from Dimarzio. Mostly with Duncans I stick to JBs or Thrash Factors. I want to try a Super Distortion because I never have, but I was reading that they Super 3 is a Super D but with more mids and maybe less high.

Coming from a JB I wanted to see what everyone thought here. Would I be better off with the Super 3 or just go with my initial Super Distortion I was going to get?

For reference I play mainly in drop C and write music like a heavier 311/old SCIENCE era Incubus. Mostly reggae mixed with rock/hard rock.
I daBble in metal, heavy metal as well.

I've had this pickup suggested to me recently, but have never heard any demos of it. Would the Dominion have more dynamics than this pickup?

They look somewhat similar when comparing the two as far as Bass, Mids, and Treble.

I've mainly been an EMG 81 user in the past, but i'm looking for a good passive pickup.

Are you looking for something with active EMG 81 characteristics?

If not, how would you describe your goal?

I'm looking for something that will be a good rhythm pickup/be somewhat good as well with cleans. I don't play lead all that much. I play about 75% distorted tones as well. I like EMG 81 characteristics, but i'm looking for something that will be a bit more dynamic and something that will react to my picking more as well.

The Pickup Place / Bridge Pickup for Squier Jim Root Tele

I'm looking to get a passive bridge pickup for my Squier Jim Root tele. The guitar is super heavy which i love! Just shy of 10 lbs. I love this guitar, but think the pickups could do for an upgrade. I'm a bit torn lately between the Dimarzio Dominion and the Duncan SH-5, maybe a Super Distortion. I'm leaning towards the Dominion currently but thought i would ask to see if anyone has experience with the Dominion in mahagony?

Also...I would need to get the F Spaced pickup correct for a Squier Jim Root Tele?

I’d lean toward the D Activator with drop tunings like that.

I had the DA in a JP100 guitar at one point. I did like it in that guitar. I know John 5 uses it too in his guitars as well. I guess since i have 2 J5 teles i'd like one to be for heavier stuff and the other to be just stock.

Sonically the Titan is a lot more mid heavy than the D-Activator and the brightness of the wood would help it cut through a bit more. Although that would depend on the amp. I have a set in an Ibanez RG8670 (mahogany body with maple cap) running through an Egnater seminar head which is basically a modded JCM800 and I always felt like the Titans could use a tad bit more top end.

I'll be running through an Axe Fx II XL. I usually use either a 5150 amp model or a Recto model. I like a good thick heavy guitar tone.

So i think i have decided against the Titan now in Alder.

I'm thinking more of either a D Activator or possibly the Dominion in the bridge. I do tune down for the music i write/play. drop C#, drop C and then A# G C F A D

What do you guys think would sound better in Alder? The DA or the Dominion?

Anyone here have the Titan bridge pickup in an alder body guitar? I've heard really good things about the Titan pickup, but want to see if anyone has an experience with it in alder?

I've had a D Activator before and it was kinda ice picky in the highs, and want to try something else.

I recently put a DA in my JP100D. I have up until now only used EMGs and i really like the DA. It does have some spikey treble, but it is very clear and articulate and not overcompressed. Here is an example of a track i just recorded with the DA in the JP100D.

I think you would be happy with a DA. It is a great pickup!
