Title: help me choose PuPs for a project strat
Post by: finest1 on January 16, 2016, 02:30:18 PM
hi all,

i have a fender mexican strat. im going to change the stock pickups.

here is the list of dimarzio pickups i already have but need help in deciding how to combine them.

guitar is alder body, maple neck, 21 frets

pickups i have are:

DP401 VV 2.1

DP403 VV Heavy Blues

DP416 VV area 61 x 2

DP420 Virtual solo

this is my 3rd strat so i want it to sound different to my others. i want vintage tone so it sounds like a strat with all the qualities that make it a strat. think jimi hendrix and SRV

i have no experience with these pickups so your experience will help

further more, the dimarzio website recommends 250k vol pots, but user feedback are recommending 500k pots. whats your views?

many thanks in advance

Id go Area 61 in neck and bridge, and VV 2.1 in the middle.
I would probably use 250k pots.

Why no to try true velvet set?..

For a vintage strat set up I would second jazzfromhell's suggestion or do Area 61 in bridge and middle and VV 2.1 in the neck, with 250k pots. Want more vintage - use an Area 67 in the neck and the VV 2.1 in the middle.

If it were my strat I would put the Virtual Solo in the bridge, with either Area 61 in the middle and neck or the Area 61 in the middle and the Heavy Blues in the neck, also with 250k pots. Keep in mind that I am not a big fan of vintage strat sounds. My favorite strat has a Virtual Solo in the bridge, an Area 58 in the middle and an Area 67 in the neck.

Cheers Stephan

Why not go with 500k pots with a push-pull pot with a 500k resistor that you can run in parallel to simulate a 250k load?
