Title: DP103-223 Problem
Post by: arislaf on July 05, 2015, 01:03:26 PM
Guys today installed the DP103-223 to my Gibson L.P. with the old (50s) wiring style. Problem is, DP 223 has very low output compared to 103. To much them, I have to set 103 volume to 4. What could be possible wrong? Please help.

Many possible reasons:

1) Bad solder joints. Reflow everything and check again.

2) Miswired pickup wires: did you follow the DiMarzio color code (I assume you did because the DP103 appears to work correctly but it cannot hurt to double check)?
Also: does the DP223 hum more than the DP103? If so some previous owner could have attempted a modification such as fitting a 4 conductor wire and using a different color code than DiMarzios. I would also double check that if it's a 4 conductor model that the black + white wires are soldered together and taped so that they cannot touch anything else in the circuit.

3) Setting the pickups to the correct height. You may need to set the bridge pickup closer to the strings in order to get a comparable output.

4) Check the electronics, and in particular the value of the volume pot. But as long as it's not a 25k pot that should not be responsible for the huge volume drop.

The previous set of pickups did not have that problem, right?

Good luck,
Stephan

Thanks. I will resolder everything from start then. I already adjust the height but no difference. Thanks again :)
