The Pickup Place / Single coils for Trower and Gilmour tones
« on: April 29, 2015, 12:51:59 PM »
It's an AVRI '62 body and a '98 reverse headstock Voodoo neck with a maple cap going in to a Soldano HR50+ XL.

there is a PDF called "DiMarzio pickup tech_data-quick_guide" that you can google.  it's older and not 100% current.

it has this to compare some of the models discussed

Blaze bridge
output  380 mv
treble  6
mid  4.5
bass  7.5
DCR  20.75k

Blaze Custom
output  410 mv
treble  6
mid  7
bass  7
DCR  16k

D Activator 7 bridge
output  460 mv
treble  6.5
mid  6
bass  6
DCR  11.40k

while specs will not tell you the voice of the pickup, it helps a little.  the original Blaze, for example, with a resistance that high, you get an idea where all the compression comes from.

specs that I took off both of mine read as:

Here are DCR specs that I took:

Blaze Custom bridge model DP703
 series - 15.91k
 north - 6.82k
 south - 9.10k
 parallel - 3.90k

 Blaze bridge model DP702
 series - 20.2k
 north - 6.39k
 south - 13.83k
 parallel - 4.37k

I don't have the D Activator 7, but the specs I pulled of my D Activator 6 shows the coils to be wound much closer to symmetrical than these Blaze models.

hope that helps.

After 25 years, I finally got tired enough of the original Blaze in my Universe and put a Blaze Custom in there. It cured all the ills while keeping a similar vibe.
Never heard of this one. Tell me more!

Blaze Custom?

Slightly tighter lows and a little more mids with a voice that's not as sterile and the regular Blaze. I considered several of the 7-string options, but going with the Blaze Custom made me feel like I was getting a product improved Universe.

I have a 6-string D Activator set that I like. If you are familiar with that model and are considering the 7-string version, I think you'd be OK.

But for metal.....you could go in many directions with that one. What sort of amp and what sort of metal?  And what brand and model of pickup do you usually use to meet your goals?

I put an AT-1 in the bridge of my EBMM axis. Also tried a Suhr Aldrige in there, which didn't work out.  I think the AT-1 sounds better outside of the realm of what you hear with Timmons, as it is capable of a very wide range.

Through the mail? As in the post?  I mean, you clearly have access to the Internet, so are you referring to email?  Even if it's just email, if they have a website, the company should have a means of contact. And it does come down to how you feel about the interaction. I might be interested in a pickup and some people might claim it's the best thing out there, but I've gotten in touch with them and the exchange just didn't feel right so I didn't do business with them.

Sometimes it can drive you nuts trying to go over all the available information.  And that's why I always do what I can to contact the company. Chances are that a company like BKP (or whoever) will know enough about what pickup will fit in what guitar. If not, they can find out if they want to. Ask them. And if they are wrong, you have the email and can get a return or an exchange based on the paper trail.

Lukather is great player and a guy who has thrown down many memorable riffs. But he is Lukather just like Eddie is Eddie and so on. A Transition isn't going to make me sound like Lukather any more than a Wolfgang is going to make me sound like Eddie. However, the approach of being interested because a player is known for a history of tone is a good approach.

The Holy Diver is beefier than BKP players like to admit. There are models they carry that are much beefier, but the HD isn't a thin or shrill pickup.  When you mention the Juggernaut, it also makes me thing of the Aftermath and that leads me to the DiMarzio Titan. A pal of mine just got a Titan and likes it a lot, finding it more versatile than he expected. I've read similar things about the versatility of the Juggernaut.

I have a EBMM and understand what you are dealing with when it comes to issues with dimensions. If find that very restrictive and not the best move on the part of a guitar company. It's also one of the examples that has led me away from wanting to go with direct mount pickups on a guitar in the future.

Just be patient and keep doing the research and getting in touch with the companies. It will work out.

Are you certain you want to replace one set of JP pickups with another set of JP pickups?

Suhr makes some good stuff. Are you totally sure they are too tall?  Could help to call in to the, and get a confirmation. They have always been super helpful when I've talked to them. Along those lines, there are a few Suhr models that could handle what you are talking about. They admit their website could use a little help, but they are great at nailing selection via the phone.

I believe BKP has an option you can ask for to mount on baseplates with the triangle tab. Email TIm and ask. The general vibe of BKP is open and transparent. The guy playing the Titan was previously playing the BKP Aftermath. They also have several options in the range of voicings you are considering. When you email them, Tim is pretty good at pairing up a pickup with a customer.

I did ask about that one with the guy at DiMarzio. He kept steering me toward the EJ neck, so I've not given it a lot more consideration. Thanks for the heads-up.

Tried a Super 2 and while it had the push and drive, it was a little congested and had more in the lows than what I was hoping for.

I did call DiMarzio tech support and the fella there suggested the EJ neck.

The D Activator is still interesting.

I actually don't really play barre chords down that low, as much as using that as a an indication of the pickups voice and clarity. Might sound odd, but it's what has worked for me.

I do have a Slash neck pickup and hearing that comparison actually turns me off from the PAF Master neck model.

IGive me a day or two to test that out to give you a definitive answer.

Any thoughts about the EJ Custom Neck or Air Classic Neck?

Before I make any final choices on which direction to start, thought I'd come back to these options.  I am also curious is anyone has any experience with the D Activator neck, Bluesbucker, PAF Joe, and the Dominion neck.

Thanks!

This set keeps sounding better and better.

Could you say how the neck position handles low chords with a dirty tone?  Things in the area of the E and A strings on and down past the 5th fret?  How is the boom/thump/woof with relation to other pickups?

What you're describing about the PAF Master sounds spot on. Especially with regard to the E and A below the 5th. So that's good to hear.
