The Pickup Place / Re: Pup suggestions for Jackson PC-1

Hasn't there been some talk about DiMarzio clamping down a bit on the return policy?  Anyway.....

What single-space hums would be riding the line between something that is strong, but not getting into a compressed voicing?  The Satch Track is something I've been considering for a neck position. For the middle, I want to go with a bridge position (or something that works for all positions).....something with an even mid section, maybe more...chimey highs...and articulate and punchy lows that will not flub out or get boomy when chugging on 80s riff rock.

The overall Super 3 bridge tone is alright, but maybe something a little less "tight" sounding...maybe more "open". I like pinches/squeals.

I grabbed a VHPAF a few weeks (maybe a month) ago. It's pretty darned bright. Maybe a little edgy, but I'd not call it crisp. Defined and articulate.

JohnnyGtr, looking for something versatile enough for all types of rock. The 2 switches will be handy to switch any full or single-sized hums for series to parallel/split.

Jazzfromhell, it's a H/S/S design. I'd like to shoot for a single-size hum in the middle. I, not at all familiar with the DiMarzio "rails" or stacked/noiseless single coils...so I'm out of element.

The Pickup Place / Pup suggestions for Jackson PC-1
« on: July 14, 2015, 08:26:15 PM »
I went and did it. I found a smoking deal on another PC-1.

While there is nothing "wrong" with the Super 3 bridge and HS-2 middle, I've always wanted to get another PC-1 for the intent to gut all the sustainer circuitry and fill it up with all passive pickups.

I'd leave the 2 mini toggles for series/parallel or series/split/parallel for the middle and neck.

What do you guys think would make for a nice versatile set for such a guitar?  Maple top. Mahogany back. Maple neck. Maple board. German FR.

If I were interested in another brand, is consider a Hot Rail neck or a Little 59 neck. For the middle, it could be a JB Jr bridge or a Little 59 bridge.

Ideas?

The Pickup Place / Re: DiMarzio DActivator X vs Duncan Invader

I've tried the X2N and the D Activator and the model from that other brand, but not the DAX.

X2N is going to be super hot. And then imagine using an ICBM to take out a house fly. It can get some workable clean tones if you split the coils.

The D Activator is also on the hotter end, and may be a little more versatile. A little more surgical precision when compared to the X2N.

Decide of you want to destroy the crowd with one chord or destroy each person in the crowd one at a time note by note. If that makes sense.

Are there any other lines from EBMM that might also use those pickups?

Back plate color won't be a conclusive indicator.

The DCR and a description of the tone you are getting from it would help. Getting DCR reading in series and each split coil could be even more helpful.

D Activator and Invader are not really all that similar.   One if tight, the other is thick.

For something "fat and tight", you might should keep on looking. Have you tried the DMZ pickup picker tool?

I am actually referring to shred guitars.

Have you tried one with a waterfall?  Did it come with it or was it done afterward?  Was the guitar set up accordingly?  And just how much was taken off each feet as it went down?

The Pickup Place / Re: Good pickups to pair with Humbucker from Hell
« on: June 06, 2015, 02:43:56 PM »

Turns out the guitar I bought came with a Dimarzio Fred in the bridge. Might just pair that with the HFH and see if it works to my liking. Dimarzio via email told me it should pair just fine. Wish me luck  8)

Definitely try it with what you already have.

DiMarzio has a # of good options for the.l neck and the HFH is worth checking out.

You're saying you want something like the HFH in the bridge?

The falloff that Ray is talking about is one of the least highlighted things I've read about with guitars. And that's a shame. I've also heard it called a "waterfall". It has multiple benefits and no downsides I can think of, at least not from a playing perspective.

As far as sustain, there can be a lot of things, which have all been pretty much covered in this thread already.

The Pickup Place / Re: -leanest DMZ neck humbucker?

The HFH is definitely lean in the low end. In some applications, I've found it a bit brittle. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out for you.

MojoTone has a few single coils that are suggested to accomplish that goal.

The Pickup Place / Re: Neck Humbucker trick for removing mud/boom
« on: June 04, 2015, 09:36:54 AM »

in last few weeks, I wanted to try something 'new'.
so I ended up bid and won a Bill Lawrence pickup (the real one, Wilde's Bill).
and surprisingly, it's the best solution for me in regards of muddy neck pickup on 24.75" scale with 22 frets guitar.

Which Bill Lawrence pickup? There are quite many (L-500, L-90, L-600, L-610), and each in different inductance values. For neck pickups I have tried the L-500R, the L-500C and the L-90 2H. I liked the L-500R. It still has a boomy low end which is partly due to the huge output this pickup has. The L-500C is better in that regard. I was not impressed at all by the L-90. The real issue with the L-500 in the neck spot is that most pickup cavities are to shallow for it to fit.

Cheers Stephan

Also tried the L500C. Albeit, I want paying attention and got the un-shielded version, which doesn't work out very well with the electrical situation I have going on. haha!  There are some definite benefits, but I'm not 100% certain if it's what I will stick with tonally.
