The Pickup Place / Re: alnico 8 strat single coil?
« on: June 14, 2010, 03:21:01 AM »
doesnt alnico 8 have to be overwound?

? what? no?

Anyways odds are you dont see an A8 or Ceramic for that matter in a single coil with poles as the magnets is because of string pull (I'm guessing). A5 has enough pull as it is and Ceramic and A8 are way worse. People complain A8 and Ceramic kills string pull on humbuckers even though the magnets are on the bottom and contact the pole pieces which really dont transfer a lot of the magnetism. I mean yeah it effects string pull but no matter what its way better than a single coil. Those guys must have the poles almost touching the strings (bad idea).

Anyways yea if you have an A8 or Ceramic single coil it would have to be overwound to add output and compensate for backing the pickup up because of the increased string pull. You would want to back it up more than a regular A5 so you dont kill your sustain. I assume thats what jerryjg was talking about.

Now saying all of that if I was a maker I would say its pointless to take those problems into account. A5 and A2 works fine. A5 for most coils and A2 if you are making a model to have more sustain and warmth.

According to Faraday's Law of Induction, this isn't making much sense... but then again, I'm used to dealing with it in ideal situations, so you're probably right.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: X2N

One of the most overlooked uses of the X2N is that it's a GREAT pickup for country. Its bright, biting top end really shines through, and I've heard some mean country players weild this thing.

Question: would you guys use the CruiserBridge in the neck position of a Strat with 250k or 500k vol and tone controls? I'm thinking of ordering one just to try it out and see why Timmons digs it so much (his neck pickup sound is awesome). And I'll be ordering a new pickguard and vol and tone controls, not sure what values to get though. Thanks guys

Go with 500k. It adds a bit of shimmer to the top end.

The Pickup Place / Re: I just lowered the height of my Tone Zone....

Actually, it took me 20 mins during that day. But....I've had this pickup for almost a year now...Been fiddling with the height since it was installed..  :D

I got lucky with the tweaking, i guess. And it matched my current rig.

For the neck pickup, something for blues, jazz, great cleans, searing lead tones, while can still handle high gain without getting flubby or muddy.

If you like thick and warm, you want an Air Norton. It matches all of those. I'm just not a fan of its clean tone, it's a bit too thick for my tastes.

An Air Zone also matches that description.

Yeah, 20 minutes is quick... First time I tried a Tone Zone it took me two weeks to find the damn spot. But that being said, you KNOW when you've found the right height for your playing. It just hits you in the balls (in the good way).

As for a neck pickup... lots of people like the Air Norton, but it isn't for everyone. What kind of sound are you looking for exactly?

I personally like an Air Zone in the neck.

Its funny all the Humbuckers from Hell up for sale on Ebay from people thinking it was an all out brutal humbucker.

Actually, all of the HfH's on eBay seem to be from authorized DiMarzio dealers that sell on eBay. Banjomikez ALWAYS has a huge stock of pickups available.

Not a bad idea at all...

Bud, consider either stickying or moving to "Everything You Wanted To Know About..." section?

Do you guys know of any 7string pickups that sounds similar to a Norton? I'm looking for one to put into my Schecter 7 string bridge.

Take an Air Norton 7, and remove the airbucker spacers...

Never played a wolfgang.

Virtual PAFs would sound GREAT in a Wolfgang.

Too bad DiMarzio doesn't make them anymore.

X2n.

Was that the Green Meanie or some other guitar?

I coulda sworn that the guitar with the X2Ns was a three humbucker guitar.

But then again, you're the resident Vai expert here.

Yeah, the X2N was in the sticker strat.

The Green Meanie had dual PAF Pros.

the Fred "lite" as they called it in the 90's was a smkin pickup.

They came in Frank Gambale model Ibanez I believe

Yep, there's a post of it somewhere around here, along with the PAF Pro lite

If I split an Air Norton and an Air Zone and had both running together maybe I can create an Air Fred :madness:

zOMFG

Or, you could route out another pickup slot in the middle of the two, airbucker a FRED (interesting thought...), and put that in the middle.

Imagine what'd happen if you combine THAT with Air Norton/Air Zone...

Yeah, then that'd work.

If you find the Norton too rude, ever considered a FRED?

I don't have anything against the Air Norton, it's just another suggestion...
