Honestly, lowering the pickup should take away some of the top end and "mellow it out" a little bit. It's a cheap mod to try.

Good to see this place is still going!
The 36th (DP103) neck and the Super Distortion (DP100) bridge have been a staple for me in Les Pauls and other guitars where I want that classic sound. The 36th is quite possible my favorite neck pickup of all. And I am a dealer for just about everybody and we wind our own pickups as well. Hard to beat the classic combo.
