Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: FRED
« on: June 15, 2015, 12:07:55 AM »
AFAIK, Satraini's earlier tones were from PAF Pros before the Freds came out. Anywho, I have a superstrat with a Humbucker from Hell in the neck and Fred in the bridge. Both wired for coil splits. The Fred definitely has a lot of harmonic content as well. Changing your picking angle yields different tones. It's definitely a more growly PAF Pro. Maybe less fuzzy too? Great rock tones. Even the split tones sound pretty good. Definitely has slightly more beef compared to the PAF Pro, even in split mode

I recently installed a Humbucker from Hell in my PRS and its great. I avoided it for so long because I had heard it was overly bright. That isn't even remotely true from what I am hearing. I've got a Gibson 498t in the bridge with it and they pair up surprisingly well.

It's bright like a single coil, but the high end isn't overbearing. It's actually rolled off quite nicely. Makes the pickup sing, not to mention in some cases, cuts through the mix very well. Furthermore, I noticed even when the tone control was turned down to zero, the Humbucker from Hell still sounded very clear. Very similar qualities like you would get on a late 60s single coil pickup  8)

Also, with that much clarity and brightness from the Humbucker from Hell, I could actually play rhythms with it with a lot of gain, even though it's in the neck position  :o

HOLY CRAP! The Humbucker from Hell with the clean channels sounds really stratty on my guitar, then when you engage some burning gain, it's an all out rawk tone. Pairs really well with the Dimarzio Fred too. The Fred is just classic PAF Pro with more growl and roar. Very happy with the pairing. Also installed a push pull on the master volume to get coil split tones. Humbucker from Hell split just sounds like its own humbucker tone, but less low end and the added hum. I just decided to split it because I wanted the volume to balance well when paired with the Fred coil splitted as well

Perhaps you can try de-airing the Air Norton?

Turns out the guitar I bought came with a Dimarzio Fred in the bridge. Might just pair that with the HFH and see if it works to my liking. Dimarzio via email told me it should pair just fine. Wish me luck  8)

The Pickup Place / Good pickups to pair with Humbucker from Hell

Need advice guys. What would be good in the bridge position to pair with a Humbucker from Hell in the neck? Preference wise I would like something that sounds more balance EQ wise. Granted, having drastically different tones can work, but it's just not my preference for my next "project" guitar. Thanks in advance

One could try removing all the screw polepieces and see if that works

IMO, go for more traditional sounding pickups in the neck and middle to get that typical neck and middle tone

I've tried one recently. ZOMG! Sexy tones to be had in the neck position. Could play some neat jazzy stuff on it  8)

Norton and two Area 67s wired to a 250k pot perhaps

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: Air Classic

Thread revival it seems. I'm thinking of getting a matched set for my LTD Xtone PS-1. I'm looking for a more jazzy tone with this guitar. Dimarzio recommended the 36th anniversary PAF neck in the neck position, and the Air Classic bridge in the bridge position. Anyone willing to share some insight on that???

133
I think I honestly prefer the Jazz neck that I have now. Running it with 250k volume and tone pots though. I might give the JB a shot again with 250k volume and tone pots. May not be the best pickup to me, but at least I have some variation in my lineup. If that doesn't work, I might swap it out for a Custom 5 maybe...  8)

Can more people attest to that the AN should sound brighter with the screw-pole pieces towards the bridge, when it's in the neck position?

AFAIK, that is true...

Only thing is that I wish the Air Norton had slightly more output. Could never seem to balance the volume of mine with a Tone Zone in the bridge (which is weird, as people seem to get along just fine). Whenever I set my Tone Zone to the right height (and the height adjustment on a Tone Zone is super sensitive IME), the Air Norton wouldn't be loud enough in the neck. If only Dimarzio made a neck pickup that had a Air Norton with higher output...
