Is there a wiring to switch H-S-H to H-H temporarily?
« on: January 08, 2020, 05:58:11 PM »
I'd like to know if you guys know if there's a wiring possible, that would allow me to switch my H-S-H pickup config into a H-H config, for example with a push/pull poti?

Unfortunately i only can afford one single guitar, which is HSH with a 5-way switch - and i love using the single coil from time to time. But sometimes i really want those lovely H-H combination sounds like "neck in parallel" or "HB+HB split in parallel" etc.

Any ideas, or is this too far out?  :madness:

Free Way Switch, or 6 way switch from Stewmac.

Or 3 way classic for humbuckers.
And middle single coil on on/off mini switch.

I think there is no 3rd option.
There is actually, like Jaguar, all 3 pickups on on/off, but that is too complicated. ;)

I would do that. Replace 5 way with 3 way, and middle SC on off/on mini toggle.

That free-way is looking like Les Paul switch, and if you have like blade version in original guitar, it would look wierd.

Jaguar way is too complicated to switch in between positions.

I would go with 3 way blade, and middle off/on. I would lose middle SC only position , but ......

Or another solution.

Keep 5 way.

And just add neck/bridge on off/on mini toggle. That way you could have like all 3, and neck + bridge, and still keep middle SC only.

U have options. Depends on needs and wants.

I was going through this with my Parker P-38. First I rewired my switch so instead of the middle pickup I got neck and bridge.

But then I eventually removed the 5 way and installed three toggle switches, one for each pickup.

I'm not sure if there is a way to get neck + bridge as 3rd position, on regular 5 way so ....
I'm not sure if that's possible.

Get regular 5 way, and on/off for neck/bridge.

Or 3 way, with on/off for middle SC.

Depends on your needs and wants in terms of middle SC sound only. ;)

Edit:

Ideal would be just keep 5 way, and turn middle SC in 3rd, on neck + bridge. And keep the rest.
But I'm not sure if that can be done. I'm like wiring noob so .....

You can ditch the tone pot if you have and wire the middle pickup to a vol pot before it goes to the switch making sure that the middle position has all 3 together. That way if you dont want to use the middle pickup you just turn down the volume completely. I did that with an epi black beauty since the original switch is meant for bridge, middle, neck+ middle ( or bridge and middle, cant remember rn). Thing is i couldn't get rid of the middle pickup in position 1 or 3 so i just activated it with a vol pot. Also you can do the mini toggle but depending on your switch the middle position might be nothing (which you can also use as a killwitch if that fancy your interest.

Get regular 5 way, and on/off for neck/bridge.

This is similar to my preference for strats - 5 way switch with a push-pull to add neck to each combination. I do this mainly to get the bridge + neck combination, and I can ignore it when I don't need it. Simple to install and simple to operate.

Cheers, Stephan

Since I'm like HSS Strat player who plays on neck/midd mostly.
In my take, I would keep 5 way, and add switch for bridge ... Since I play mostly clean on neck, I would in my case put it on bridge.
But if you are opposite of that and force bridge and dirty, put it on neck. ;)

Luckily for me.
Neck + bridge is nice option to add, ofc.
Bot for some reason, I prefer middle SC alone sound. XD
It's nice option to have for sure. But I'm used to funky middle SC sound ... And since I play on clean more, it's way more usefull for me. ;)

Ibanez vlx91 switch with an on/off for the single coil.
You get.
Bridge bucker
Inner coils parallel
Both buckers
Neck bucker parallel
Neck bucker

Plus adding the single coil to all those.

After wiring and playing my guitars with swiss army knife switching, I realized why most of that stuff is not on factory guitars.
Too complicated
Too much overlap
Potential to sound like crap
Too much to remember on the fly.

Strats with 7way switching, the wiring above, or a standard 2v2t 1 3way les paul setup are all I need these days

Plus adding the single coil to all those.

Interesting. But how is it wired? Can i have the single coil only? Is the single coil combined with the humbuckers in some of the positions?

What exactly are all the combinations you're wanting to get? From what I've read you want

-bridge hb
-neck hb
-brige hb and neck hb
-neck hb in parallel
-middle(?) sc with either hb
-middle sc by itself?

Now that some time has passed, and i had time to think about it, i have a better idea what i actually want. I want the sounds that an Ibanez AZ can achieve, but with my HSH setup. Especially, i want some parallel wired sounds (that i can't get with H-S-H and the standard JEM wiring), and i'm not interested in HB+HB at all.

ok, if I'm interpreting correctly, your guitar currently has this configuration

but you also want this? except for the two hb's in parallel

Also, I think you're maybe the power tap feature with parallel wiring on the az? It's actually like a partial split using either a resistor, or a cap, or both resistor and cap to partially ground one of the coils (essentially make one of the coils quieter) to achieve a singlecoil-like sound without a huge volume drop.

I've tried this before, and it's really more useful for low output humbuckers. Just regular coil splitting is more preferable for hot hb's imo.
