Title: Steve's Special(b) and Fred(n) in mahogany? Have I gone mad?
Post by: Kelly Briggs on December 28, 2017, 11:58:52 AM
I'm looking at an old Korean Ibanez (2 humbucker, mahogany/maple, fixed bridge,) and I'm  but underwhelmed by the stock pups. Musically, I'm a little ll over the map(no country) and amp wise we're looking at Fender DRR, JCM800, Carvin rack stuff, JC77...sometimes all at once!

Will the SS and Fred work in mahogany or will they be tertible?

That should be a great setup.  I have a friend who uses the  Super D in the bridge and a Fred in the neck in his les pauls exclusively.

SS should work well in mahogany. I have a mahogany guitar which has the DLX Plus Bridge in the bridge (which is similarly voiced to the SS) and it sounds great. It has a flatter midrange response compared to many other higher output pickups which should balance well with the midrange character of the wood.

No experience with the FRED in the neck.

Cheers Stephan
