The Pickup Place / Re: What pickup is this?

They had a bass pickup called a Model G that had a closed plastic cover like that.

I’m trying to remember the guitar version. It might be the original Super 2. It was a less wound version of the SD.

Or just get three stacked pickups. They will blend better that way.

If you have to swap wires, swap them on the stack. Single coils have the start of the coil, which touches the magnets, connected to ground. That prevents hum when you touch the magnets.

You can't really split stacked pickups, especially the virtual solos, as the bottom coil is only for hum rejection.

The Pickup Place / Re: Anybody ever try ceramic in an aired pickup?
« on: June 29, 2017, 06:04:05 PM »
All the air gap does is reduce the strength of the magnet slightly.

Ceramics are typically stronger than AlNiCo magnets, so you might get something that sounds like an A5 if you use a C8.

Ceramic magnets don't increase the induction the way AlNiCo does since it's not metallic. So that will further change the tone between the two.

Only way to know is to try it. I'd imagine it will take a bit if top end off the tone.

Yah, I would expect it to mellow the treble a little. But you don't think it's likely to soften the fast attack/tight feel of the ceramic, give it a looser, slightly "bouncier" feel? I haven't bonded with ceramics, for the most part because they always seem a little stiff to me. Perhaps A8 might be a better candidate for this swap.

Maybe. I tend to like brighter pickups so I use ceramics quite a bit.

The Pickup Place / Re: NPD fit EMG85/81 in my Kramer 210

85/81 balances much better. 81 is way better in the neck than the 85. IMHO they should be sold like a 85b/81n set and not vice versa. Or even make a version of the 81 which does not hum.

Not sure how it balances better since the 81 is louder.

Back when I used EMGs they were dead quiet.

The 81 is a bridge pickup. It's wound hotter with 43 gauge wire. The 85 is a neck pickup. It's wound like a PAF. It was originally the 58, as in a 1958 PAF, but the 58 was a bit noisy so they replaced it with the 85. The 58 had mis matched coils, which is why it was noisy.

So you have them reversed. Thst's why the 81 is muddy at the neck.

And they should be dead quiet. I've never had any hum coming from EMG pickups.

Here's a tip; try using a higher value volume pot I find that 50k or 100k sounds better. I also agree the EMG guitar pickups sound better on 9volts. The bass pickups sound better at 18volts.
