Be more specific.  Do you just want anything single sized that is as hot and dark as you can get?  If that is the question, the answer is BC-2.  I can't imagine it sounding good in the neck, but it answers your question.

If you want something that is still "traditional single coil" but is as loud dark as you can get, the answer is Virtual Solo for noiseless, or SDS for non-noiseless single.

If your question is "something that still sounds like a neck single coil pickup but is high output and warm-ish" then Injector Neck or HB-2.  Injector neck is basically an HB-2 with a more articulate high end, that's why it works better in the neck than an HB-2, which I've found really only works in the neck in very bright guitars/amps and/or with 500k pots.

would DiMarzio staff or Duncan staff do that?

Eric at DiMarzio did EXACTLY that for me when I wanted some custom Multibuckers made last year.  He dug around for days and could only find 7 circuit boards, Steve wouldn't let him use them because someone else already had dibs unfortunately, but Eric had be me send in some Chopper/FT-1 stock versions and he re-did them with Cruiser Neck/FT-1 like I wanted.  I only paid for the Cruiser Neck coils.

The Pickup Place / Re: Steve Morse neck in the bridge?

I have tried it, but I found it had a very piercing pick attack, even moreso than a bridge PAF.  I guess it needs that for articulation in the neck, but it was too much for me in the bridge.  Other than that it was fine, but the piercing chirp got to me.

Since I'm generally not a fan of overly bright in the bridge, I'm hoping it isn't an issue.  I wanted a PAF type pickup that I could put in the bridge and not have to use 250ks to tame; specs say it might fit the bill but the proof is in the pudding.  Will report back once it's in.

I put A3 in my VHPAF to tame it and it's still almost as bright as a VSolo in the bridge, but just about there with a 250k load.  With 500 it was just too harsh, even with A3.

Anyone ever try that?  Looks vintage output but darker, seems interesting.

I know you are being anecdotal, but it really does depend on context.

No, I'm using an analogy to indicate that I think you are both missing the point.  ALL those things matter, inductance, capacitance, resistance, etc.

I mod tube amp circuits.  I have thousands and thousands of hours actually in the circuit learning what the affect of this or that is.  Everything matters.

As for capacitance, I've had EEs swear to my face that you can't hear a 100pf cap.  My response is always the same, which is to pull the largest bill in my wallet out and put it on the table, and say, "wanna bet?".  Of course you can hear 100pf, and feel it, easily.   Thats the difference between thousands of hours actually doing it, and "I think based on what i read in a book and by best guess that.......".

"No, it's not the voltage, its the current!"  "No, it's not the current, its the voltage!"

Wrong.  It's both.

Pickups I truly hated:

1) Anything made by EMG.  I know some people love them.  I can't stand them.  I've had them, I've tried to figure out what the appeal is, and I just cannot hear anything appealing there.

2) Duncan Pearly Gates.  Yuck.  One of the most bland pickups I've ever tried.  It was to tone what eating cardboard is to taste.

3) Dimarzio Super Distortion.  I know a lot of folks seem to love it, I just didn't.  It wasn't nearly as bad as a PG or EMG, but it just didn't have anything I liked about it and given the hype, I expected to like it just a little.

By the way, 100pf to 250pf isn't insignificant.

Steve Blucher is the designer.  Larry is the name.  I don't think Larry has designed a pickup in at least 2 decades, if not 3.

I'd chime in to bring back the VIRTUAL HOT PAF.

The 36th bridge was supposed to 'uprade and replace' it, but when I tried the 36th in the guitar I had the VHPAF in, it was both more shrill in the highs and had less balls in the lows than the VHPAF.  The VHPAF went right back in.

and non-stagger the polepieces in pickups that would otherwise have staggered polepieces for an upcharge of $45.

Actual list is $10 for that option, street price lower.  I do this all the time.
