Help identifying pickup model/wiring+switch question
« on: July 25, 2016, 04:00:59 PM »
Hello all!
I was hoping to gain a little insight on a vintage strat with a dimarzio pickup setup that I am fixing for a friend. (Pics are attached) I am unfamiliar with this style of pickups so any information you could provide would be great.! The volume knob is unresponsive when the switch next to the jack is in the down position... what is the function of this switch? Also there is a red wire that seems to be unattached (see pic)... where should this wire be soldered to?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

That's a Dimarzio Shockwave system.  The part near the jack is a battery powered booster.  IIRC it's a 30db boost?  It more than likely doesn't work in the boost position without a battery.

I once had a set of Shockwaves pickups, too but without the active electronics. As passive pickups they sounded quite good and did not hum. The only drawback was their low output, comparable to the HS-1. I guess they are quite rare now.

Cheers Stephan
