If it helps you, I couldn't find list of DiMarzios which were available in late 1970s and early 1980s. -.- I did try to google it day or two ago. Didn't found anything usefull. -.-

The Pickup Place / Re: Just curious: mini humbucker in HSS Strat?
« on: February 06, 2020, 01:49:44 PM »
I was about to put Air Classic bridge, with 2 Area 67s. With 300k pots originally.

I want to get something like this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozt0VDRSoRE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYL_u-Cf94k

Both of this are with 500k pots.

I want something acoustically on neck and mid.

And bridge something in like P90 Marshall light Crunch teritory. xD
Around that sound.

I don't like hot fat honky paf's for sound which I want to achive.
And since I'm moving soon to small apartment ... I guess no more rock and roll earthquackes. xD
On the other hand I generally don't like classic singles on bridge.

So something around P90 Marshall light crunch, but still usable on clean.

Or something like Cruiser in bridge. Something tiny bit more fatter then usual Strat.

Not single coil, and not like, 36th PAF in bridge. xD Something around that area in sound between; Bluesbucker, noiseless P90, Cruiser and Air Classic. Around that sound area.

So I pretty much started to watch all this clips on YT to get idea of something general.

I really did google pickups like; Duncan Seth Lovers, 59s, Gibson Classic 57 .... Pretty much very very similar pickups soundwise.
Tons of stuff all around: Some say 59s need 500k pots to keep them open, some say with 500k they are extremly bright. For Gibson 57s, they say that with 250k they sound like mud. xD Seth Lover is kinda love hate - some say they are mud with 250k, some say that 250k is okey and 500k too bright ..... -.- On the other hand, some say that mini humbuckers generally are okey with 250k pots. Usable. Tons of information .. And I have no idea who to trust. XD LOL.

I did however tried Duncan 59 in Strat from a friend, in bridge. I think he has SSL-1 on other 2 positions. Duncan 59 is pretty similar to Air Classic. Air Classic has tiny tiny bit more mids. Otherwise - similar pickup. It did kinda sound cool in that guitar. I forgot to ask about which pots did he used. But based on fact there are 2 SSL-1 in guitar, and master volume and tone. I guess 250k.

I tried to google Air Classics with 250k pots, didnt found anything usefull in terms of information. -.-

On the other hand again; I only got info on mini humbuckers, that they sound like fatter Telecaster on bridge. XD
But they sound really really good on 250k pots. xD

Ah, internet mess, tons of info.

I should message that friend to ask info about pots, on Duncan 59s.
It sounded good there. I guess Air Classic would sound very very similar.
I should message him to get info.

Anyway, if friend says that he has 250k pots on that 59 - SSL1 guitar.

I will get 300k pots with Air Classic and Areas. ;)

If he says they are 250k, dillema solved.

Only thing which kinda did disturbed me around that guitar. Tiny tiny bit lack of midds on bridge.
So other then that, amazing guitar. Air Classic should solve this tiny issue perfectly. ;)

If he says pots are 250k, I'm getting 300k then. :D

Well, I'm getting some "miss information" from internet.
I tried to google few pickups similar to the one I was about to put on bridge.
Some say that this few similar models need 500k to "breathe properly". Some say 500k is "overkill" in terms of brightness.
So I kinda did have idea to maybe try some mini bucker in that range.
I've read on few places whey would be okey with 250k pots.

On the other hand.
500k on singles would be overkill. -.-

The Pickup Place / Re: Dimarzio Virtual Solo
« on: February 04, 2020, 12:00:01 PM »
Injectors maybe?
That would be my first option to explore. :D
But if you are happy with current HSS Strat, I guess Solo would be okey option.

Edit:

If it helps you, I've heard somewhere that Injector Bridge is like DiMarzio Chopper, somewhere around that sound.
And I've heard Chopper in all 3 positions, on different Strats ofc. It was a really cool pickup.
So I guess .... 3x Injector Bridge would be okey also.

Edit2:

It would be cool to hear Chopper vs Injector Bridge comparation.
But if they are similar in sound, as that person claimed they are ... I would be all over it.

I guess 3x Solo or 3x Injector Bridge is okey option to explore. ;)

Ofc don't buy them just cause I said something. But if you menage to try them for free, do it instantly. ;)

But 3x Chopper Strat would be amazing, for sure I can confirm you that.
And if Injector bridge is anything close to Chopper, it would be cool also.

It's standard bridge pickup, and it sounds cool, in middle is usable. On neck is okey for gainy lead sound.

But it's a rail, and if Injector bridge is anything close to it, it would be cool Strat.

I've really heard somewhere that Injector Bridge is like Chopper alike ... so ... I didn't heard Injector bridge in person.
But Chopper is very cool pickup.

My conclusion; he started on something like Crunch Lab or Super Distortion. Or pickup like that. High gain muddy beast.
Later he switched something tiny bit less nasty, but still gainy, and bright. Like Norton or Mo Joe.

So if I needed to put names.
I would guess he started on Super D.
And in terms of 2nd pickup.
If you said it's Gibson branded, I guess something like Norton, and bright - Burstbucker Pro comes to my mind.
Clear and bright, low wind, but still nasty. ;)

So let's just put some clips. Maybe it will give you idea why I said this. ;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyrt-c_GDvk

Hm.

Based on clips ....
What would have Norton brightness, low wind, and Crunch Lab nastiness if it is a pickup made in 1980s and Gibson branded. XD

Burstbucker Pro only comes to my mind. ;)

21
EVH reminds me of gainier Satriani. XD That more gainish over-effected overdrive sound.
I guess Super Distortion would do it. ;)
EVH is high gain with too much effects. So Super D. is okey for that. ;)
Pretty much Satriani with more gain. ;)

22
If you ask me, it's darker then Air Classic and PAF Master. XD

It's darkest of the 3. ;)

23
I'm gonna guess it's not high gain Laney. ;)
There is no need for anything hotter then Satriani / Andy Timmons on amp like that. ;)

And if you have like Lionheart 5. PAF would be cool for that amp.
I love that amp. Cool toy. :)
Lionheart would be in my top 5 amps of all time. ;)
I love that amp. ;)

And 36th should be okey for it. ;) If you have amp like that, there is no need for Tone Zone and this high output monsters. XD

PS.

And yeah, just wait someone with more experience to confirm this.
I'm pretty new at kinda, recommending pickups stuff. I don't want someone to spend money on something and later be dissappointed. So for everything, I kinda ask someone to confirm it. ;)
But if you ask me, based on neck pickup needs, I would go with 36th in pair.
And based on amp, there is just no need for high gain. ;)
But I think 36th is the darkest PAF of DiMarzio, so there is no need to get any other. ;)

24
I believe him for some reason. Since in that time pickup market was limited to 3 models overall. xD

25
Yeah, but when people describe pickups in like advanced terms like: " tighter bottom end  " or something like that. I get lost. I'm bad at describing guitar sounds , so I use like .... the most simplest terms ever like: modern or vintage, warm or bright. xD This " tighter bottom end " and terms like that are too advanced for me. ;)

And if you decided for one of this 2. Put 36th. ;)

Both are good. But if I had Bluesbucker on neck, I would go with 36th on bridge. ;)

Norton is more modern sounding, and higher output. But still versatile.
36th is more vintage , but can sound good on distortion. Also versatile.

Both are good. ;)

Luckily. Both don't care about woods and pots.
Norton sounds good on mahogany and alder.
36th same. Sounds good in every wood, with any pots. xD

Both are super amazing pickups. ;) You can't go wrong with this 2. ;)

And maybe this would help you.

Btw.

I tiny bit looked at yours posts to try to find other gear like amp.

U are still on Marshall DSL 1?

Or we can add this to topic:
Which pickups would sound good with 250k pots?
I had in mind PAF Pro, PAF Joe, Gravity Storm neck ... Hm ... Air Classic Bridge?

27
Depends on what you play.
If you like high gain mudfest metal - Tone Zone od Dual.
If you like Slash and AC DC - 36th.
If you would love to be versatile, and do tiny bit of everything - Norton.

Neck is same thing.
Air Norton - Warm shred sound.
Air Classic / Bluesbucker - vintage bright sound.
PAF Pro - bright tiny bit modern sound.
PAF Joe - cross between PAF Pro and Air Classic I guess.

Very different pickups.

And since you said you have PRS Single Cut.

I would eliminate right now - Air Norton and Tone Zone .... Complete mudfest on mahogany. ;)

28
I'm not sure why. But if I wanted Van Halen sound copy without buying expencive replicas. I would go with Norton on bridge. XD

Edit:

But it makes sence for him to play Super Distortion for 1st album. Since in that time pickup market was limited.
But today you can have tons of stuff to replicate sound without spending 200$ on pickup. ;)

If I wanted something like that, Norton or Satriani range would be my starting point.

But again, makes sence for him to play Super D. in that time.
Since choice was pretty much; Gibson Classic 57 or DiMarzio Super D. xD

And we all know that Classic 57 would not work for that. ;)

But today. U have Norton, U have Satriani range. ;)

29
Tone Zone and Dual Sound - high output monsters.
Norton - nicest of this 3. Good cleans and good overdrive. It's cross between high output pickups and HOT PAFs.
36th - classic honky hot PAF.

Necks.
Air Classic - classic PAF with scooped mids.
PAF Pro - versatile tiny bit more modern sound. Good all around pickup. Amazing for everything.
Air Norton - pretty much like PAF Pro, just on opposite sound side. PAF Pro is pretty bright. Air Norton is mud bomb.
PAF Joe - Cross between Joe Satriani and Gibson 50s pickups.
BluesBucker - should be humcanceling P90 in humbucker format design.
Humbucker From Hell - Mistery to me. Never heard one.

Btw.
Sry, cause of my lack of english. I describe pickup sound in very simple terms. ;)

The Pickup Place / Just curious: mini humbucker in HSS Strat?
« on: January 30, 2020, 12:25:29 PM »
Just curiosity topic.
We all know that HSS Strats have problem with balancing singles and bridge humbucker.
Well ... This got me thinking:
Mini humbuckers instead of full humbuckers in HSS?
Maybe with 300k pots?
