News & New Guys / Re: Just had a stroke
« on: September 09, 2019, 05:35:26 PM »
Take care, take it easy, rest, and RELAX. I lost my drummer to a series of mini strokes at 48 yrs old. The cause? Stress. Take it easy, and as far as I am concerned, the whole trouble creating threads thing can fall on someone else's shoulders.

My family will keep you in our prayers, bro.

Sometimes tried-and-true is where it's at,

^^^ this ^^^

Most of the songs that we consider benchmarks and classic and groundbreaking were made using stock gear without all the processing tricks we use today. Those guys used what they had and made the best of it with their fingers and their amps.

Truer words were never spoken. So many times we go on this "quest" with gear, etc., and forget to realize that if we have a decent amp (or may not even decent), a playable guitar, etc., that so much of our tonal quest lies in our fingertips.

Guitar Lounge / Re: New neck time.

I am not that worried about the serial #. I just want my number one back in playing order. I understand why the project is so expensive and that a luthier's time should not be free. I just can't justify spending the coin when I have so many options that are less than half the price.

I don't think I have made it any secret, that my '97 Big Apple Strat has pretty much been my number one axe. Anyhow, since the day I got it, it has had a slight twist in the neck. I mean ever so slight. Of course over time, that twist has gotten worse. I didn't really notice how bad, until I played my G&L and went back to it. Over time I adapted, even as the twist just kept getting worse.

I took it to a luthier and the cost was just stupid. So I ordered a new neck today. I am surprised that duthiers are even in business anymore for feet jobs when they charge more than the cost of a top shelf neck from Warmoth just to drop 1 name. The cost of my neck with the same woods, radius, etc. Was half of just a regret, and 1/4 what the luthiers around here want for a new slab and fretjob.

I have the Heavy Blues 2 in my Tracer neck. I love it. Still has that single coil "sting" but is big and fat at the same time.
Has enough output to keep up with a bridge humbucker too. It's my new favorite stacked bucker.

How about the Super2? It has more than a little bite.

The mini bar (off topic & misc) / Re: Allan Holdsworth
« on: August 16, 2019, 03:30:23 PM »
Me to bump. I just checked out a live vid of Alan doing Devil Takes the Hindmost from ‘92. Man!!!!!!Crazy that I do some of the same techniques but in a completely different genre. The three note per string finished, string skipped runs. They sound so much different over a jazz progression. That guy was just a true master. That legato. Man o man. Sorry I am waxing all Holdsworth fanboy, but my mind was just blown like in those jet commercials. There is this purple cloud hanging over my.....Anyhow.

Wish I would have been turned on to Holdsworth sooner.

The Pickup Place / Re: Recommendation for S-H guitar?

Even though I don’t have one in any of my guitars, the ones that I have played with the Breed sound nice with one exception. That being a Les Paul. It sounded dead in the Paul that I played.

I downsized from a rack system and 412 to a 212 combo. I quickly installed casters. I am now playing it and a 112 combo in stereo.

I am putting a new rack together as well. That whole ball of yarn cane from me scoring an ADA MP-1 preamp for $75 a few years ago. That preamp is as good as I remember. Great tube tones, programmability, and diversity. Perfect to go through my stereo solid state Peavy setup. Now I need a Quadraverb.

The Pickup Place / Re: Wiring schematics and stuff

I just took a look and I also don’t particularly care for how the schematics are organized. It just seems less than intuitive in how it is laid out. That being said, I would have to agree with the statement about Dimarzio customer service. I contacted them not long ago, and they were very happy to take the time to make some suggestions.

I would say that or the PAF ‘59.

I wouldn’t classify it as a Dimarzio’s Duncan ‘59. I have a ‘59 and n more than one axe, and have the Pro in more than one axe. Not even in the same zip code, tonally speaking. The ‘59 has a vintage voice going on, and is a much darker sounding pickup. They’re both great, and versatil, but the Pro is a balanced modern vibe.
