The Pickup Place / Re: PAF '59

From what I've heard from other vpaf and vhpaf were really good sounding pickups too. On one hand, it would make think they are running lean to keep cost down, but then they keep two pickups which really seem to hit the same target.

I could be wrong on this, but it seems their catalog had more in the 80s. Like I said. I could be wrong on that one. And without an 80s catalog, probably am.

So I look at the PAF '59 and get a little confused. The marketing jargon starts by saying they used Larry's '59 Les Paul cherry sunburst as the reference. I thought that was what they did for the 36th anniversary paf.

They really DO need some new blood in marketing. Also, if you already have a set that used your guitar as a reference, then why do ANOTHER set that uses your guitar as a reference.

Needless to say I am more than a little confused on this one.

I second the Fred. It does metal VERY well. I am thinking about this one in one of my axes as well.

I have a PRS S2 Standard 22. It has a mahogany body and neck with rosewood fretboard.  The 85/15 S stock pickups are good, but I think they are not for my style of playing.  I was thinking of the Seymour Duncan Custom 5 bridge and Jazz neck, but I haven't tried DiMarzios yet! So, I thought of giving it try!

I personally don't like the custom 5. It can get thin very quick. Even on a warmer guitar I have I have found it to be the case. On the Duncan side of things, I have tried a JB (can get shrill quick and to my ears and being that I have it in two guitars, sounds better with a 250k setup than a 500k for controls). The Full Shred (Articulate and kind of a medium output articulate and tight). PG + Kind of a full sound, not terribly high on output, but distorts nice (overwound Pearly Gates with an a5 magnet vs the a2. Some claim it is shrill but I have found it to not be the case in my Big Apple Strat with a rosewood fretboard).

I have used the X2N and I have never found it to be dark or bright. Kind of balanced, but BRUTAL on the amps input. Do NOT expect chimey cleans from it full on. BUT, parallel and split sound very good clean to my ears.

How much available preamp gain to you have? The reason that I ask is that if you DO have a good amount of preamp gain, then maybe a moderate output pickup might be better suited for you. I used to use nothing but high output bridge pickups, but found that the versatility and articulation of a moderate output pickup works better for me. And by the way, I also do a lot of high gain stuff. Check out my instrumentals at www.acadams.bandcamp.com

Anyhow, the moderate output thing is just a suggestion. Don't pigeon hole yourself into thinking that you absolutely need a serious high output pickup. You may find just the opposite.

Really just a hot rodded "screamer" variant with more clipping options and a gain boost.

;D love it!!! Don't get me started on what she wants from you if you happen to want to include a Jimi song on a record. It would be different if I were paying Jimi, but she had no input on his creative genius. I would rather pay Chas a royalty. Sorry for going off the rails. I just had to vent about contacting the Hendrix estate about recording a song. Their demands changed my m il and real quick about buying anything with his name on it including reissues of his records.

[So it arrived Thursday! Did the install Friday. No issues. Put a borrowed fretboard rocker on it. Frets were level. So I basically had to drill it for the tuner studs and the body screws. There is enough meat at the heel that I won't need the micro tilt, and the fret ends are smooth a butter. I couldn't be happier. Before I get hammered, Yes it IS a Might Mite. Hey, I am on a tight budget!

V30s. I had them in a Hughes and Kettner cab back in the early 90s. Once they broke in, man those things were GREAT!

Is this pedal breaking any new ground?  Not really.  But it feels/plays like a very refined and completed idea that makes me smile and want to play more.

How does it compare with something like a Fulldrive II MOSFET? I have one and this pedal always piqued my interest.

I just added my DS-1 with the Wampler JCM and high gain mods to my board to replace the other heavily modded DS-1. I don't think the Rat or any other distortion will be on my list anytime soon. I do, however, really like the Rat and Rat based pedals. It's a tone that is unique and RUUUUUDDDEE!! I used a Proco Rat back in '88. Great dist. box. Post some sound clips of the DRV if you get a chance.

If you looked at the marketing from the competition, it would appear, not be an actuality, but would appear that other pickup manufacturers are just the boon of r&d and they have all of these new pickups that will do everything but pick you up (pun intended) from the airport. While Dimarzio announces a few new sets with a couple of guys that I had to Google (just like someone else mentioned).

In this competitive world you really DO have to work to keep your name out there. Otherwise the perception is that your product has become irrelevant no matter how opposite the case may be.

FYI, you can buy a genuine Fender replacement neck direct from Fender due to the defect.
They don't sell necks normally but in a case like yours they will.
Of course you'll have to surrender the old one.
Warmoth necks are built to exact Fender specs and with legal authorization to do so but you won't get the labelling or a serial number.
Not sure how important that is to you to keep it Fender.
Using a Warmoth neck will reduce its resale value.
Not sure if that is important to you either.
I contacted Fender many many moons ago about it, and could only surmise that after multiple times of contacting the both bynphone and email that their response, or in this case, the lack of one was their way of saying they could care less. At no time was there ever an offer of a replacement if I sent in the old one. To be honest, at no time was there even a response.

Your experience with them must be way more positive than my own.

It's all good. My new neck is on the way.
