Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: The Tone Zone
« on: June 06, 2019, 03:48:17 PM »
I'll also say that pinch harmonics are effortless with the Tone Zone.

Agreed. I have installed more than a few of these in various guitars and even though this pickup is full and fat, harmonic squeals are pretty easy with this one. Great metal pickup, and I never found this pickup to be muddy. I also find it does a great job with Floyd trems in that it fattens up the guitar (although I have a lot of Floyd equipped axes that I would describe as anything but thin). Kind of does what the old Double Whammy was designed to do in that respect. I think this is going to be the bridge pickup in my all maple hs kahler spyder equipped axe.

Gear Closet / Re: Compression?
« on: June 06, 2019, 12:32:52 PM »
compression can work really well in certain settings.  Compression is used very well by guitarists such as Jimmy Page and David Gilmour, and both sound as expressive as anyone.   If you've got a lot of instruments to cut thru, or one or two big bandwidth hogs (e.g. another distorted guitarist) then compression has all positives.  In my opinion it's important to use it subtly and well.

I used to like the old Boss cs-2 foot pedal compressor - haven't used it in many years.

http://www.proguitarshop.com/index.php?CategoryID=40  - lots of options!

I'm on the lookout for a 2nd hand Rockman mini rack compressor.

It's funny that the Dynacomp was mentioned. I actually still have one on my board. Use it a lot. You just have to set it cautiously. Set right, it's one of those pedals that you forget you have on. Set wrong and it is just terrible. That being said, it will probably get replaced with one that has a blend control so I can get back a little dry signal.

I was a member did a number of contributions and then the attitude changed and I left and really havent been back.  I hope things are better over there.
Same here. Tried the gear page and left after four or five posts.

During his early Racer X days it was Super Distortions wired in parallel. He talks about it in his first instructional vid.

George Lynch. Made me start playing and sort of solidified it after seeing Dokken on the Tooth and Nail tour when I was 10 yrs old. Then I found Yngwie, Randy, Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert, Jimi, Jason Becker, Chet Atkins, and Brent Mason.

The Pickup Place / Re: Best humbucker for both cleans and dirt?
« on: June 05, 2019, 05:29:09 PM »
I am not completely brand loyal so I’ll throw my dog in this one in the form of the stock pickups in my Big Apple Strat: Duncan Pearly Gates Plus (Pearly gates with an A5 magnet instead of an A2), and Duncan ‘59 neck. This guitar is my do everything guitar. It’ Scream, cry, shred, clean  up, split, etc. I can do everything with that axe from modern metal, drop tune, blues , country, neo classical, you name it. My only complaint is the bobbins have had cracks in them after six months of owning since new. So as far as quality goes, I am kind of on the fence with Duncan. This was actually my first set. I have a JB in another guitar that I could take or leave. For me the JB is nothing to write home about.

I prefer 250k pots regardless of the pickup.
The tonal difference is not as great as some would have you believe. It just tames the high end a little.

I have as well in many a guitar. My experience has been the same as yours. I actually PREFER a 250k with the Duncan JB. WAY better sound out of that one with a 250.

I just go noiseless single coil. There are too many that really capture that single coil vibe without the noise to warrant dealing with it otherwise.

The Pickup Place / Re: Capacitors affect your pickup tone even on 10.
« on: June 04, 2019, 12:29:08 PM »
This all makes sense. I played around with cap values when i modded a couple of DS-1s. I ended up with a .033 uf cap for the one I kept for my board. I did tend to fatten things up and made the tone control useable past the 9 o clock position. Different scenario but it definitely backs up the comments on cap values and how they affect tone. I should have also mentioned that when the tone control is dimed it is much less shrill.

Welcome. I tend to agree with you on the Duncan distortion. I tried that one many moons ago and just couldn’t get on with that pickup. I am sure you will be happy with the SD. Great pickup.

This makes sense. This isn’t the first time that it has been explained to me that dc resistance doesn’t mean output. And your point is more than proven with this pickup in particular.  What’s funny is the misinformation provided, in large part, by manufacturers. One in particular states that dc resistance is a better measure than millivolts of a pickups output.

I am no expert on the subject, but it can be a little confusing when going from one manufacturer to another and getting so much conflicting info. It’s like asking a drag racer for the camshaft specs they are running. You’ll either get no answer at all, or a bs spec as a polite way of telling you to not ask.
