I don't like active pickups either, but interestingly enough, Luke had a much better guitar sound with EMG than with DiMarzio. His EMG-sound is juicier and more alive. Now with the Transitions he sounds dry, stiff and sizzly. Some people seem to like it, but it's not my cup of tea.

Guys, what do you expect? The Transitions are designed to work with strat-type guitars, 009 strings and bright Bogner amps.

At least you should try taking those muddy covers off. :)

I've already seen two videos with the Woody guitar and i have to say - i find the sound harsh and quite stiff (well, mahogany is heavy, but those highs...). Vai's sound in the video is very buzzy/fizzy. I don't like it at all, and i can't understand all the praise in the YT comments... [shrugs]

Haha, i was wondering how long it will take until some asks about them. I'm curious too. :)

Fair enough, but you should provide a link. It's common practice.

The first Ibanez JEM is dated 1987, so you do the math :)
Where is it said that he used only that particular Andersen for the whole record?

I really like his tone on this record!  Much more than his later tones :)
it has that PAF pro tightness and clarity?
anyone know for sure?
This is the guitar he used for that record and they are dimarzio's and have black hex poles.

For the green meanie, it was actually a Super Distortion and PAF (not the PAF Pro) in the neck.

Do you actually have a source for that? I never heard that he used DMZ Super Distortion, until your posting.

Vai wasn't using PAF Pro's on an album until Skyscraper.

That's what i always thought about the Paf Pro too. And i thought that i could hear it, because Skyscraper sounded different regarding the guitar tones (thinner, tighter, dryer, more refined). Hmm...

Is it known if Vai had already a relationship with DiMarzio in '85? Then it could as well be a prototype.

Somewhere i read about custom DiMarzios, but i don't remember in what context.

Sorry for the necro. I'm researching this topic ATM.

I must ask: How can Vai have used the Paf Pro in the Green Meanie in Eat 'em and Smile (1986) when according to the DiMarzio website the Paf Pro was released in 1986?

Any insights?

The Gravity Storm Br has definitely less low mids, so it's sounding more balanced than the Breed Br. The Breed is just too bottom heavy with an alder body and 010 strings IMO.

Why are you guys posting the same thread twice, over and over again?

According to the DiMarzio website, that's a YES.

The Pickup Place / Re: DiMarzio Ionizer 7 vs Illuminator 7 | Comparison
« on: October 28, 2015, 09:13:23 PM »
Wow, nice comparison, and tight playing as well, Art! Sadly, no solo comparison. :)

I clearly prefer the Ionizer7 - more character and more beautiful tone. The Illuminator on palm mutes sounds like somebody hits a tin barrel, sorry (reminds me of old heavy metal sounds). I never understood why most reviews of the Illuminator left me disgusted of the sound, but there it is again.

I have the Ionizer7 in my Apex100 and love it. It even healed my allergy against ceramic magnets, LOL. It seems this set can do it all. Time will tell.
