Title: PG13s for Epiphone Casino Coupe
Post by: Crane on May 05, 2021, 07:32:45 PM
Wow. I had no idea this forum existed. I'm glad I found it.

I played an Epiphone Casino Coupe in Woodstock N.Y. and it was awesome. I raved about it, but didn't buy it because I don't like to make quick decisions. Besides, I have too many guitars. Anyway, for Christmas that year, my fiance bought me one. I love the guitar, it is a perfect fit for me and the sound is really good also, but I thought to myself, if I can get the sound a tiny bit clearer, it would be perfect. So began my quest. I can not fit humbuckers in there, and I toyed around with the idea of buying a second Casino Coupe to route out and experiment on, but ultimately decided against it at least for now. It has P90s in it, which I am a fan of, but not for what I am using this guitar for - jazz. I bought a pickup ring that converts P90 to single coil and tried the best single coil I own (Fralin Blues Special) but it is not the right sound. Now I am looking at mini humbuckers. I found a good deal on Gibson minis and tested them out, and they are definitely in the right direction - clear but fuller than a single coil. If I could find something a little fuller (meaning more bass and mids, like a humbucker sound) that would be perfect.

I have all but decided to purchase a PG13. One of the reasons is that it has screws to adjust the pole pieces. But I have been on the fence about which one to get - bridge or neck version? From reading the descriptions, it sounds like I should go with the neck, but when I see the specs it looks like the bridge would be better. They both contain the same ceramic type magnet, but the bridge has more resistance, bass, and mid levels according to the DiMarzio chart. I can not find many sound samples on youtube except for Mr. Gilbert playing some crazy leads and some foreign dude with a pointy 3 pickup guitar.

So if anyone has some experience with the PG13s or advice on choosing one, I'm all ears.

Welcome to the forum!

I have no experience with the PG13s. My favorite mini humbucker is the DiMarzio Vintage Mini (DP-240) which is the brightest of the bunch. Single coil like highs but fuller overall, coupled with a tight low end. Probably not the no. 1 choice for jazz but since I don't play jazz I am not the best person to ask.

If you want more of a PAF type tone in a mini humbucker format, you can seek out the older mini humbucker (DP-168).

I have written reviews on both pickups in the "Everything you wanted to know" subforum.

Cheers
Stephan

The Casino Coupe has dog-ear P90 pickups.  Where did you find a conversion ring that goes from those to mini hums?

Some guy sells them on ebay and reverb. Pretty cool eh? They are not the best quality in that they are not sanded to a smooth finish on the edges. And the plastic scratches easily. But they are thin and flex onto the Casino Coupe body which is concave under the neck pickup.
