The Pickup Place / Re: Murky sounding but great playing basswood squire

First, make sure your guitar is worth upgrading. I don't know which Squier models are basswood, but I think most of the Standards are Agathis, which is similar to Alder. Second, make SURE your pot values are a good match for the pickups. Low pot values can deaden a great humbucker, and high pot values can turn a warm single coil into an ice pick. After all that, the injector and Area pickups are both great.

Actually, agathis is similar to mahogany. As for "worth upgrading", that really depends on the owner. However, the recent Squiers are really good bang for buck, and upgrading all the hardware yields a guitar that's quite comparable to an American Standard equivalent

Maybe the Tone Zone might be what you want

Could be me, but I can hear the slightly drop in output for the outer strings when you use a on trem spacing humbucker in the bridge. However, the difference in output is very little though. Maybe the "feel" when you pick the strings may be affected?

Off memory, the Norton has a bit more top end as well

what would be the general tone of the norton? i'm fine with a little brightness, but it needs to be balanced out.

Don't get me wrong, you still get midrange and low end with the Norton. Low end wouldn't be as much as an Air Zone

Try Norton for bridge and 36th paf for neck.

I like the Norton as well, but I'm not sure if the OP would like it. He may still find it too bright sounding

The Pickup Place / Re: 36th Anniversary Neck Pickup In The Bridge Position

Interesting. I might consider this setup in conjunction with a Dimarzio PAF Master neck in the neck position. Looking to get something that is more polite sounding via lower output in a semihollow bodied guitar of mine  8)

Well I'll be damned. There's another post about it already  ::)

First of all, what are those pickups you have installed?

If you like a versatile bridge pickup, PAF Pro or Norton might do it. For the neck, I would suggest PAF Pro, Air Norton, or 36th anniversary PAF neck

Could be the amp also. EMG 81s aren't that bass heavy, but you can achieve that heaviness through different amps

Honestly, there are so many good Dimarzio pickups that can do that. Of the ones you've mentioned, Super Distortion should be good

I guess as always, tone is subjective and one of personal preference. I really dig the 36th. That being said, I would have suggested the Air Classics if you didn't pursuit the A2 magnet swap route
