HSH diagram - 1vol, 1tone, 1toggle, 5-way
« on: October 26, 2015, 09:55:58 AM »
Hi,

I'm assembling HSH guitar (Chopper in bridge, Pro Track in neck, True Velvet in middle) and I would like to have 1 master volume (no push/pull), 1 master tone (no push/pull), 1 toggle switch and standard 5-way switch.

I was looking for specific diagram and couldn't find it anywhere. Here it is:

Switch off:
pos 1. Neck hum
pos 2. Neck hum + middle
pos 3. Neck hum + Bridge hum
pos 4. Brige hum + middle
pos 5. Bridge hum

Switch on:
pos 1. Neck split
pos 2. Neck split + middle
pos 3. Neck split + Bridge split
pos 4. Brige split + middle
pos 5. Bridge split

Maybe you guys can help and tell me where I can find it?

Thanks in advance, Paul.

Hi Paul,

You can split both pickups simultaneously with a DPDT toggle switch - the regular Les Paul style toggle switch will not work.

To get the pickup combinations you want you will need a 24 pole switch (aka Super Switch). The standard 2-level 5-way switch will not give you the bridge plus neck combination in position 3.

I don't have a diagram ready but I can guide you through the wiring.

Thank you Stephan,

I appreciate your help. As I don't want to make any new purchases and I already 2 pots, 1 DPDT and 5-way regular switch I looked for some other combinations.

Can this one be done with 1 volume, 1 tone, DPDT and 5-way regular? (DPDT instead of push/pull)

I know that you said: "The standard 2-level 5-way switch will not give you the bridge plus neck combination in position 3.", but maybe? :)

P.S. Hopefully I won't be banned for posting links to SD forum ;)

Paul.

Hi Paul,

the switching matrix you attached does show the possible combinations but there is no wiring diagram shown. I very much doubt that these combinations can be achieved with the regular 5-way plus one DPDT. The critical position is #3 - everything else will work.

The regular 5-way switch will give you bridge HB, bridge HB+middle, middle, middle + neck HB and neck HB. With the DPDT you can split the humbuckers simultaneously to get the traditional strat combinations but I can see no way that the DPDT would enable you to switch between the dual HB to middle in position #3.

Maybe other folks here have more ideas?

Good luck,
Stephan

Stephen,

I think I'll go with super switch :)

I think what I need is combination of this: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUHSH5L1102/WDU-HSH5L11-02.html

and that:
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUHSH5L1103/WDU-HSH5L11-03.html

with additional DPDT switch to go back and forth between those two. And of course in a second diagram humbuckers need to be split in pos. 1&5

If you can help me with that I would appreciate it. I'll try to figure it out by myself, but my experience is limited :)

Paul.

Yes, you take the first linked diagram, and instead of putting the linked wires to the switch, you put it to the top lugs on the DPDT. From the center lugs of the DPDT you run a wire to ground.

The switch will give you Bridge, Bridge + Middle, Bridge + Neck, Middle + Neck and Neck. DPDT in - bridge and neck operate as humbuckers. DPDT out - bridge and neck are split.

Good luck,
Stephan

Stephen,

Would this diagram be ok? See attachment.
