The Pickup Place / Re: Fender DH-1 (Atomic) vs. DiMarzio AirZone
« on: July 31, 2015, 04:05:30 AM »
If you like the tone playing in the lower registers of the fretboard and the quirks only appear in the upper registers you may have set the pickup too close to the strings. Try backing it a bit off and see if the tone improves.

Good luck,
Stephan

Hi all,

From the specs published by Di Marzio it appears that the bridge model has slightly more bass and that's basically it.

Has anybody used both models in the same guitar and can comment, please?

If - like me - one has one model each - which should go in the middle and which should go in the neck position?

At the moment I have the bridge model in the neck position and the neck model in the middle, and that's mainly because my neck model's wire was too short to put it in the neck position, and I did not want to extend the wire at that stage.

Many thanks,
Stephan

I have now set up a different tele with a Chopper T in the bridge, a Cruiser neck in the middle and a Cruiser bridge in the neck. I have not yet foreseen the option to select the parallel mode on the Chopper T but that is soon to follow. The tonal results for the bridge and neck pickups are as I already described. I also like the bridge + middle position but the bridge + neck and middle + neck positions have room for improvement. I expect that the bridge + neck improves with the parallel option on the bridge pickup, and I don't really use the middle + neck combo much.

BTW I used a 500k volume and a 250k tone pot. 0.0022uf on the bridge, 0.0068uf on all other combinations.

Injector neck would be good with 500k pots. Volume balance with the bridge humbucker should not be an issue. You may have to experiment with the height on both pickups though.

... and make me want to play more.

That's the goal of it, right?

Normally I would have gone with the Injector neck for the middle position but with the bright wood combination you have you obviously made the right move.

Agree about the Chopper - great pickup, so is the Chopper T.

Yes, that one or the Cruiser neck.

As far as I know the FS-1 was designed for the bridge position where string movement is shallow. As a result the tone may too round in the neck position of any guitar.

I scored a VHPAF (EDIT: it actually is a VPAF bridge) very recently and it arrived yesterday. Put it in today and the first impression is very positive. I first had a SD Screamin Demon in there and while it was OK, I always felt it could not keep up in terms of tone, dynamics and bite with the Area 67. I then put in a Bare Knuckle Black Dog, which was also OK but I also found myself always playing the Area 67. The Black Dog had some kind of nasal quality to it in this particular guitar (I have one in another where it sounds excellent).

I feel the VPAF is a much better partner to the Area 67 than either of the ones it replaced. Gone is any hint of nasalness, and also gone is the slight coldness of the Screamin Demon. It is warm, clear, articulate and has that certain top end bite without being shrill. Very nice.

BTW I use a 500k log volume pot in this guitar, a 250k tone pot with a 0.0022uf cap, and a 24-pole switch that drops the load to 250k when the neck pickup, the bridge pickup split or both pickups combined are selected. The combinations on the Switch are:

#1 Bridge humbucking
#2 bridge neckside coil + neck in parallel
#3 bridge humbucking + neck in parallel
#4 bridge neckside coil
#5 neck

The Pickup Place / Re: Pup suggestions for Jackson PC-1

Never played the Protrack but I would go for the Chopper instead. Going by specs the Satch Track and the Chopper should be well matched.

Sounds like you found your tone. It's always great when that happens.

Have fun with that axe,

Hasn't there been some talk about DiMarzio clamping down a bit on the return policy?

Yes, right here: http://www.dimarzioforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,5329.msg39762.html#msg39762

The Pickup Place / Di Marzio Virtual Hot PAF bridge + Area 67 neck?
« on: July 17, 2015, 08:10:00 AM »
Hi,

has anybody ever tried this combination in a guitar?
If so what were the results?
Specifically - can the VHPAF keep up with the Area 67 in terms of brightness?

Many thanks,
Stephan

Gear Closet / Re: Vox Lil Night Train/G12 Greenback Cab Combo
« on: July 15, 2015, 03:26:12 AM »
I am familiar with the Greenback since I have used one for years in a Fender Deluxe Reverb II. No experience with the Lil Night Train (only the regular Night Train, and that amp I remember as being bright). A bright amp through a warm speaker should work well. Unless you need/want clean headroom that combo should work.

Kent Armstrong said in a ToneQuest Report interview that Rory Gallagher's number one strat had an older FS-1 in the bridge position.

Going by specs ProTrack seems to be the wrong direction. Satch Track or Fast Track 1 would be the ones to look at. FT 1 may not have enough output for you though.
