The Pickup Place / Re: HSS Pickup combination
« on: June 10, 2022, 03:36:17 PM »
HSS my current favorite is a PAF Master bridge with a couple 67s or a 58 and 67.  500k pots.  The Master blends better with the singles than the 36th I think because it's a little brighter, a little tighter, and less "agressive/rock" sounding.  I always split in position 2 so that the bridge side coil on the Master is in parallel with the middle split Area.  You'll need a reverse polarity Area or just reverse the magnet in the Master if you want to do that, but it' worth it.

Only unpotted DiMarzio is the '59 PAF.  Don't think ordering unpotted is even an option on anything else.

High end of the Fred always struck me as close to a single coil in the bridge, very strident. Maybe it needs 250k pots; it's harsh with 500s.

If you look at the specs, it's a hot-ish PAF with double hex screws instead of slugs/filisters.  Which is what it sounds like to me.  Right in the PAF family, on the hotter side of that, but definitely not a 'distortion' pickup.

The Pickup Place / Re: 2 stacked sc in SERIES
« on: April 15, 2022, 01:49:25 AM »
Anyone ever try running 2 area/virtual vintage pickups in series? As in, all 4 coils in series.

It's not an uncommon mod for true singlecoils to get humbucker-ish tones. Curious if it's been attempted with stacked singlecoils.

Yep.  Stephan is using the wiring I gave him.  My recent experience is that I use a 1M volume with 1M resistors to create a 500k load in all positions EXCEPT when I pop them into series, the extra 1M resistor goes away so the series pickups see a 1M load.  Opens up the high end.

You could get away with it using a bright bridge pickup to, but I use injector bridge so when in series, that's a lot of frickin wire.  Even two Area '67s in series, ignoring the dummy coils, is 10k of 42ga wire, about as much as you could ever fit on a modern humbucker if you wrap it really tight, and a hotter bridge is even more wire.  Add that the pickups aren't sitting right next to each other so that you get some phase cancellation, that can make the high end pretty dark.

The Pickup Place / Re: Middle single in an HSH

I am looking for something for the middle position of my RG that has a little less magnetic pull as it grabs the strings when I dive the trem. Even when I lower it, the pickup just grabs the strings and you get a nice "bam" as a result. Any ideas?

Anything without Alnico 5 rod magnets.   Alnico 5 rods have insane string pull, cause buzzy strings and intonation issues unless at least 1/4" from the string when held at the last fret.  I quit using them years ago because of that, and was reminded why again recently when doing a setup on a guitar that had Alnico 5 rod magnets..........yikes.  They do NOT play well with low action, and they MUST be far, far from the strings.  Alnico 2 or 3 is actually louder in practical usage because you can get it much closer to the string without issue.  Something like a Cruiser, which is a rail pickup designed to sound like a single, would also have low string pull.

Did you use it with a 500k or 250k load or something in between?

Thanks, Stephan

Pots that actually measure 500k+

I can see where Larry’s coming from when he said “that’s the most misunderstood pickup we ever made.”

Larry said that about the DiMeola?  Wonder why.  I'd think the Humbucker from Hell would get that award, solely for giving a low output PAF that name.

Because the whole "named winder" at a company that produces pickups en masse is garbage and marketing BS, designed to suck money out of the gullible, much like the word "vintage" when applied to anything made after '65.

The more I play this, the more I like it.  The extra tightness on the wound strings vs. a 36th and the way artificial harmonics just jump out are great.  No idea why it's discontinued, IMO it's one of their best pickups for sure.  Not thin in the bridge like a PAF Pro can be, not as middy as a Breed Neck in the bridge can be, a little more interesting harmonically than a Mo
Joe.  Really, really cool member of their PAF family.   Also, when split, the split coil sound is more robust than a 36th.

Ignore everything else you read on the web RE these (and there isn't much).  It is NOT a high output pickup, and it does not sound anything remotely like a Tone Zone or Super D.  It's like a modded 36th.

To my ear it's a pretty traditional mid wind PAF.

To compare it to the 36th bridge:
Similar output, maybe a tad less perceived.
More thumpy lows, more hair on the top of the wound strings.  Wound strings don't get dark, which seems like something Al would like as it maintains articulation on wound strings better than a lot of similar pickups.
Less vocal mids, but still plenty, and less air on the highs but maybe more bite.

Nothing whatsoever like a Super Distortion.

To sum up, it's another viable flavor in the ever growing line of DiMarzio PAFs.  It's closer to a 36th bridge than a 36th bridge is to an Air Classic bridge or a PAF Master bridge.

Satch Track is like a Chopper with slightly less bass.  Chopper is a mid wind PAF sound, with 250k pots pretty dark.  If you don't like traditional humbuckers in the neck, stick with FT1.

The Pickup Place / Re: DiMarzio wins double cream trademark battle

Isn't the trademark only in the US or something?

BKP has no issues doing double cream, so apparently it's either only US or too difficult to enforce elsewhere.

The Casino Coupe has dog-ear P90 pickups.  Where did you find a conversion ring that goes from those to mini hums?

Just beware if you adjust an HS3 close to the strings.  It's A5 rod magnets, so it will cause intonation and fret buzz issues if you get it real close due to string pull issues.
