The Pickup Place / Re: Bridge n Middle to balance Injector Neck (HSS Strat)

..."There is a school of thought of using a high output humbucker with a stronger output while split with the middle pickup, and then having a much louder output when the humbucker is in-series....."
I follow this school of thought, and use an Air Zone for bridge. It splits better than any humbucker, and works superbly with the middle PUP for quack.
It's basically a very big, very fat PAF sound in series.

Thanks GREENLION, I didn't think anyone was going to reply. What's happened to the forum lately?
As stated, I really like the AT-1. It has a little more character than the Air Zone, which, I agree, can seem a little bland. I think the At-1 has more tops. I split my bridge PUP a lot, as I play some country stuff, so that's important to me. Both split well, but the AZ is a definite winner there.
Which one I prefer really comes down to the neck PUP I'm pairing it with, and I've just changed from a SD "Hot For Tele", to Dimarzio Pro Track. Tons more bottom end, and the AT-1 sounds thin in comparison.
Back to Air Zone. Geez I'm glad I didn't sell it!

Why are there so few reviews/ comments on this PUP?
Does it suck big time?

The Pickup Place / Air Zone and At-1: swappin' and turnin'.

Since there hasn't been many posts lately, just letting everybody know I've taken out my AT-1 and put my Air Zone back in (bridge position). Mine's a partscaster, mahogany body with maple top.
I keep swapping between these PUPS, love them both, but wanted to try something new. I've always split the Air Zone to slug coil, as it has a little more output. Even turned it so slug was closest to bridge.
This time I've split to screw coil, and can report that, yes, it is a sweeter sound. Thanks Slugworth, and others, who've pointed this out.

The Pickup Place / Pro Track split produces LESS treble!

Has anyone else experienced this? I've read that it splits quite well, but I expected it to sound single coil-ish, as in thinner and brighter. Thinner yes, brighter, no!

Actually, I've heard more people complain that the TONE control doesn't work effectively after the Fez Parker mod.

Would love to read some reviews. I'm really not seeing these for sale much, or written about much

Apology not necessary, thanks for taking the time.

thanks for the reply, jazzfromhell. Would you do a review of the Satch Track when you get it?

The Pickup Place / Single coil sized neck PUP advice required.
« on: July 07, 2015, 05:17:21 AM »
I'm thinking of replacing my neck PUP. I have a 3 PUP Tele style guitar.
I currently have a Seymour Duncan "Hot For Tele" in neck position, with the cover removed. Nice, but I want something a little thicker (more full size humbucker like?), but still with ability to cut through.
I have an AT-1 at bridge, so want something with some balls to keep up with it.
I've tried a Chopper, but didn't have enough "cut" to its sound, sort of indefinite. Same with an Air Norton S. I used one for years, but finally decided it didn't cut through well enough. It was nice with overdrive, but I'm talking clean sound here.
Thinking maybe ProTrack, or, does anyone have experience with the Satch Trak? I believe its a little brighter than the Pro.
Any other suggestions? Go nuts guys.
Bill.

Ray, I've tried a lot of PUPS in mid position, basically trying to get a good quack combined with the bridge or neck.
The HS-2 single coil is absolutely great for that, because its really crisp. Its also the only middle PUP I've found to be usable on its own. Others have been too midrangey and indefinite.I have an AT-1 in bridge, and of course, it doesn't really compete with that, but I use the AT-1 split a lot of the time, and they balance well. I have a Seymour Duncan "Hot For Tele", with cover removed in neck position, and the HS-2 balances well with that, too. I've got it set pretty high, but string pull hasn't been an issue.
Hope this gives you some idea.

Ray, if you can tolerate the alnico 5 string pull, I'd try a HS-2 wired single coil. As Dimarzio says, one of the best vintage Strat sounds around. Mine reads around 8.2 and I have it in mid position. Lovely crisp sound.
Bonus is you can often pick them up very cheap second hand, as folks think they're old technology (which I guess they are in hum-cancelling mode).
