The Pickup Place / Re: Finally Tried a Super Distortion...
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:46:13 PM »
I have an AT-1 in the bridge of a Dean Cadillac (think fat neck Les Paul tone) where for a long time I had a Super Distortion that I loved in there (and was stupid to get rid of).  My first impressions of the AT-1 weren't extremely favorable, but it has been growing on me.

Under high gain, the AT-1 is more piercing than the Super D and I usually roll back the tone on it a bit.  It does not have quite the killer mid snarl nor the pretty high end for leads like the Super D, but it has a greater perceived harmonic output, and I think it's fair to call it a cross between the Super D and Norton, at least for high gain.

However while the Super D is good for medium/low gain stuff, the AT-1 is truly awesome in that respect.  Sweet, saucy, and complex.  Just the right amount of twang.

If you're after *the* hard rock pickup, you've already found it in the Super Distortion.  If you want something more folk rock/roots rock oriented but with more punch and edge than a PAF 36th, then the AT-1 is excellent.

Chopper in both the middle and neck.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: The Air Norton

It's rumored that Buckethead used a atypical setup of an Air Norton in the bridge and Tone Zone in the neck for at least the period around 2005-2007.  Most of his high gain riffs came out of bridge+middle, but he used the bridge alone when he wanted to back off a bit.

I believe it.

Thanks for the review.  One thing I've learned is that anybody can make even the best pickup sound BAD.  But in the hands of someone skilled in the art of tone, a great pickup can make the difference between sounding good and sounding phenomenal.

By far the best resource I know for wiring diagrams is Phostenix's site (google Phostenix).  He has an incredible amount of stuff already covered.

Other good sites are Seymour Duncan and Guitarelectronics.

If you need something custom and are willing to pay for a diagram, google Hermeticoguitar.  I believe he charges reasonable rates, and I know he does good, accurate work.  He helped me out with one a few years back before he started charging, and I still use that circuit today.

Always remember to check wiring color codes!

IMO it's too big, too loud, too much.  I'd sooner use a Tone Zone in the neck.

Yes!  Didn't Buckethead use dual X2Ns for awhile there, back in his Jackson V days?

Bill and Becky are great people.  I'm not in love with their pickups, but from a character standpoint alone they have been a great influence on the pickup industry.

Found the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiPwGH_jQ3M

"Very very slight difference," he says.  Listening again, I think his conclusion may be due to a severe mid-scoop with his amp/rig/whatever.  You can't hear any difference in mids if they're already cut down to zero.

So perhaps if you're a mid junkie like I am, the difference will be more distinct.  And if you're a mid scooper, not so much.

Awhile back I found a guy on Youtube who did a very unscientific comparison between the Crunch Lab with its bar orientation towards the neck, and flipped with the bar towards the bridge.  He concluded that there was little to no difference.  Unfortunately I can't seem to find the video, but I have to adamantly disagree with bro's findings.

In my Dean Caddy I flipped the Crunch Lab.  Have always had it with the bar facing the neck, but today flipped it to face the bar towards the bridge.  The pickup has the same timbre and voicing, but to me it sounds like there is a definite EQ shift.  Where the focus before (bar neck) was on lower mids, the focus now (bar bridge) is on upper mids.  Less low range chunk, more high end brightness.  It's a clear difference.  For the record, I was careful to raise the pickup to exactly the same height as I had it before.

About that Youtube video, I don't know if the problem was the guy's ears, guitar, recording equipment, pickup height, or what, but I completely disagree that flipping the CL has little to no effect.  I definitely like it better with the bar towards the neck, but flipping it is another option which of course some people may prefer depending on their guitars, amps, hands, ears, and playing styles.

I was poking around looking at hollowbody Ibanezes and found this sound clip that was share-worthy.  Ibanez AS73 hollowbody with dual HFHs.  I'm not a jazz player but could really appreciate the jazz tone he's got going on.

My very first guitar had the trem blocked with a #2 pencil.  I laughed my ass off when I found it, but hey, it worked.

USPS shipping is silly fast from Utah to everywhere in the USA.  Not sure why, but it is!

This was my second deal with wxs3, both were perfect.  Trustworthy as always.
