If you are going for the tones that you stated (Gilmour, Clapton, SRV, Healey, etc) the dual humbucker AR420 with 2 Ibanez humbuckers is NOT the way to go...

You could get some good classic tones out of it, with maybe a set of Seth Lover humbuckers or 36th Anniversary PAFs, but you won't get THOSE tones.

The fact that the Dimarzio tone picker program always suggests the Tone Zone shows how out of touch they are. The Tone Zone is not a bad pickup, but it is a very 1980's "Paul Gilbert-ish" Shred pickup. The Air Zone is a more versatile pickup.

There are a couple of problems you are going to run into when you try to mix humbuckers and single coils. The biggest hurdle is that single coils sound good with 250k tone and volume pots, and most humbuckers sound good with 500k pots. The next issue is that vintage output single coils are overpowered by humbuckers, especially hot humbuckers like the Tone Zone.

If I was going for Gilmour, Clapton, SRV, Healey, etc, I might try the Area 61 in the bridge, area 67 middle and area 58 neck.

If you really want to nail the Gilmour tone, plus some great blues tones, I would go for the Seymour Duncan SSL-5 bridge with SSL-2 neck and middle.

If you are using a wound 3rd string on your acoustic, that string is already pretty small and the string's core has to be much smaller relative to the entire string, which includes the outer winds. An unwound 3rd string on an electric guitar is solid, so it is less likely to break.

This is one of the mysteries of the universe that not even the most brilliant physicists have been able to figure out;  Why the smallest, thinnest, most delicate string breaks before the larger, thicker, stronger strings. I doubt anyone will ever crack this conundrum.

A8 sounds/feels nothing like A5 in the pickups I have tried it in.

Another set that I really like and reminds me of the 36th set a bit is the Seymour Duncan A2Pro Slash Signature Set.

The Paf Pro and Paf Joe also work well with the Air Zone bridge.

"Alder bolt-on guitar" can cover a wide spectrum of guitars, so its kinda hard to say. A Fender Strat with 250K pots and vintage trem will sound really different than a Jackson Superstrat with a Floyd Rose Trem and 500k pots. So its kinda hard to make specific recommendations.

I like the Fred, but found the Mo Joe to sound very sterile and boring. They are both kinda thin sounding for some Alder/maple neck guitars. I would try the Paf Joe neck with an Air Zone or Breed bridge.

What you heard sounds about right. I think the 36th does sound more "alive" or 3-D sounding. The 59 lacks mids, so it really needs to be in a guitar that emphasizes mids (like a Gibson SG) to balance it out. The 36th has more mids and works fantastic in a more balanced sounding guitar wood combination, like a Les Paul.
The 36th neck pickup works well with the 36th bridge, and I like it with the Air Zone bridge as well.
I have tried dozens of pickup sets in Les Pauls over the years, and the 36th set ended my search. I have the 36th neck and Air Zone bridge in a mahogany bodied PRS Santana SE.

The CustomCustom works well with 250K pots too, which a lot of humbuckers do not.

I like the VV54Pro, Area 61, and Cruiser Bridge as middle pickups combined with humbuckers in the bridge and neck. I find the other Area pickups and Cruiser neck too weak to match well.

I like to be able to split the bridge humbucker too, so I like the CustomCustom.
