The Pickup Place / Air Norton S vs Regular Air Norton
« on: April 19, 2017, 04:35:51 PM »
Hi everyone!
Is there big difference between Air Norton S and Regular Air Norton or they are really similar?
I had some experience with regular Air Norton.
Made some search but did not find any valuable information about them. Some guys say S version is better than regular, some say this is very muddy and bassy, some say this is very bright and almost single coilish  :-\ it is really confusing!
Have any one any experience with both of these pups?  ???

Steve Vai in his favorite guitar Evo uses Evolution Bridge in both as bridge so in neck position too.

Hi,

I usually get mine from addiction-fx. If you go the alnico 5 route, the pickup will be similar sounding to PAF Pro. A2 in evo neck will thin out the bottom end and add even more mids and smooth the highs, which is probably the closest you are looking for.

As DarthPhineas suggested, though, mags are cheap and you can get couple of them and try them out, maybe you'll end up liking completely other one at the end.

Thank you, man!

Which one is more tight? 36th PAF bridge?

Magnets are affordable enough that it should not be a problem to buy a selection and try them out.

Which country are you in?
Azerbaijan

I can refer you to a guy for magnets in EU, if that's less hassle than the alternatives.
Thanks! But I will buy magnets via eBay. just need to decide which magnet.

Guys! Help!
I opened DiMarzio Evolution neck's base plate and found magnet bar cracked into 2 pieces.
I guess overheating baseplate with soldering iron caused this while I tried to fix destroyed threads to soldering screw nuts.
Now I want to buy a new magnet via eBay. But do not want ceramic. Want to try some  alnico. Will alnico 4 be good or alnoco 2???? Which magnet will smooth highs and reduse bass?

P.S. sorry for my lack of English knowledge.

I guess I understand what you all mean by boomy. But was the EVO neck installed on a 22-fret or 24-fret guitar?
I've noticed the position (also the wood of course, smaller impact tough) really changes the bass EQ of a pickup. I remember having tested a long time ago a JS1000 with a paf pro in it: I found it too boomy, but I bought many years later a paf pro which was in a 24-fret RG and I founded it too thin. The EVO neck for me is great because even the low notes are percussive enough and this is what I was searching for.
As on 22 fret guitar so on 24. Wish I this pickup has less bass and more high-mids.

No. Evo 2 has different magnet.

I had the same problem with Evolution neck and added a capacitor in series. Now it is perfect!
Cheap and simple fix.

Oh yeah. That definitely might work too. Never knew why I never thought of this at the time of commenting. To be honest though, I never thought the Evolution neck was every boomy. But I guess we all hear things differently, and maybe even using the same pickup on different guitars may yield different results.

IMO, sometimes what people call "boomy", that could be tweaked by the pickups and electronics, or even changing the saddles and/or bridge assembly to a different material or to a better quality one
Tried this pup on a couple guitars. Every time it sounds boomy. Tried tweaking its screws, height. No drastically result.

I use Virtual Solo in middle position between Evolutions in bridge and neck (HSH)
Really great pickup. So unique. Fatness of humbucker and still single coil. And I love how it interference with Evos even without coil tapping.
