DiMarzio chopper.
I didn't find nothing like single coilish humbucker. Just very weak dark humbucker with lack of attack and overtones. May be I tried it with wrong guitar. Replaced it with VVHeavy Blues 2. And loved. It is in neck position and better matches with Evo 2.

Never heard of that one?

Good article as always! By the way. How it compares with Evo 2 or Evolution bridge?

Definatly Air Norton S. Vintage Blues 2 (Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2?) has good sustain and cleaning up very well but it more close to Malmsteen tone than Petrucci.

Never heard about this. But it is funny for me.
Anyway I wonder why DiMarzio not so active with promotion.

May be Evo2 ? This pickup very versatile and work great for EVH tone and modern too.

Hey man!  I've been a member here for a little while now but tbh I don't visit all that often....
What I'd like to know is, what can we do to get this to be a more active forum? I love Dimarzio pickups but yet I find myself on the Duncan forum FAR more often than I'm here. The Duncan forum is very active with lots of various discussions.
I'd love for this place to resemble that forum. What are they doing right and this forum doing wrong?
We need to find a way to liven this place up...
I'd likely be more apt to donate to this forum IF it were a place that I came to regularly. I'm sure others feel the same.
Duncan pickups just more popular. It seems like they care more about promotion than DiMarzio. So there are more Duncan users and that is why their forum is more active.

Heya,

Interesting! So what exactly don't you like about A4 Evo? Too smooth? Too thin? I was saying in the other thread, that you should get A2 Evo neck, but if you find A4 too weak and smooth, and dislike it, you're probably gonna dislike A2, a smoother looser and even weaker magnet type.

It's an interesting find for sure. I never understood why Larry doesn't offer few of the models with different magnets, since some really do shine with them (SuperD with A5 is like what a Duncan C5 ever wanted to be, and with A2 it's instant Van Halen... Norton with ceramic is totally ultimate PAF on steroids tone, Paf Pro with ceramic in neck is more balanced and melodic Super 2 etc).

Are you going to swap in another magnet, or you'll going for a different pickup altogether?

Cheers,
Cory
No. Not thin. But too smooth and more to the vintage zone. Not bad sound at all. I just prefer bright sound with bite and attack. Yes. I remember your words about A2 and I red some articles and learned A2 may be too weak.
Now I think I found at last what I really need. Returned to a Virtual Solo using adapter ring for fitting single coil into a humbucker rout. Virtual Solo for neck and Evo 2 for bridge. Just need to adjust their height for balancing. And it gives me tons of clarity I need. And i think Virtual Solo tonally great matches with Evo 2. Do not know but they have some similarities in EQ.

And what about evo neck? Well... may be I will sell it.

Hi,

Well I'm glad you found out what works for you. I'm sad Evo didn't work out as you thought it would, though when you have the willpower and time, you could try it with A5 instead, before you sell it that is, it might be closer to what you were looking for, before commiting to the Virtual Solo.

Evo neck with stock ceramic, or A5 can be used in the bridge as well, specially with single coils in a HSS setup, with A5 it sounds similar to the Paf Pro.

Regardless what you decide about Evo neck, you found atleast one combination of pickups that work for that guitar. :)

Cheers,
Cory
I don't think I will continue experiment with this pickup. It is very old pickup. Almost ruined it while swapping it between a couple guitars. Destroyed its threads and too shortened wires. I was young and inexperienced. Sucking with modding.
It took so long time while I found my perfect combination and tweaking  it proper.

Humbucker in the bridge and single coil in the neck is a great combination, taking advantage of what each pickup can do best. I had a strat set up this way and really liked it. Still, I moved to HSS with that guitar.

Cheers Stephan
Yeah! Single coil in neck is cool!

The Pickup Place / Evolution Neck with Alnico 4
« on: May 03, 2017, 02:14:18 PM »
At least modded my Evolution neck's magnet with alnico 4.
Result is not bat at all but I am not happy as with its own factory Ceramic so with a new Alnico 4.
Now it lost its boomy lows and cold ice picky highs. More warmer and at the same time less bassy. And lost its power due to magnet weakness. Some sort of woody sound good for jazz.
Well I can say this pickup sounds like.. hmm.. like Chopper! Yes. Not exactly the same but has some similarities. Chopper with increased harmonics, power and a little bit of more mid wah sound.
So... this is not sound I am running for. But may be some one who will do this mod will be happy :)

Yes. It is small but tall with two blades. It looks more like side by side blades strat pick up. Like Chopper.

Well I like the sound of regular Air Norton in 24 fret guitar. It is smoother than Evolution neck but has  less boomy bass. So will S version sound the same in neck position of 24 fret guitar?
