The Pickup Place / Pair Steve Morse Neck with...? (not Steve Morse bridge!)
« on: February 06, 2019, 03:10:45 AM »
Hi guys,

ok, the obvious answer is Steve Morse bridge. But I suspect this is not what I want.

Background story: dual humbucking Alder Strat (fixed bridge) with maple/Rosewood neck.
It had a FRED in the bridge and a PAF in the neck with 3x500k controls.

I got the Steve Morse neck pretty cheap from a friend who did not like it and as I had never played one, just tried it in the neck spot for fun. To my surprise I quite enjoy the darkish low output tone. And the flutey singing quality it has. So I decided to keep it and need a matching bridge pickup.
The FRED in the bridge is voiced totally different. The attack is much sharper and the overall tonality is too much of a contrast - so out it goes and I need something different.

Now the Steve Morse bridge is a super bright pickup from what I read - not sure I want that.
Probably need something in the bridge spot that is closer to the slightly darker tonality of the SM Neck and will complement it nicely.

What would you recommend?

The Pickup Place / DiMarzio Illuminator's zebra different coils?
« on: May 04, 2016, 05:02:22 AM »
Question on these... I ordered 2 zebra (black/creme) pickups, 1 DP257 and 1 DP256.
I received the below.
As you can see one has the screw coil in black, the other has the screw coil in creme.
Are these supposed to be like this? Is the neck DP256 supposed to be installed in reverse (as JP did with the Air Norton back in the 90s)?

The Pickup Place / Just ordered 4 DiMarzios - what am I in for?
« on: March 09, 2016, 05:22:39 AM »
Ok, it has been a long time but after a few personal issues have been sorted out, I'm back at guitar playing and the DiMarzio camp.

Just ordered:

Illuminator neck and Illuminator bridge for a crazy dual-humbucking Tele (1-piece Honduran Mahogany body / LP-scale Honduran Mahogany neck with quilt Maple fingerboard).

Fred with Breed neck (DP165) - for another crazy dual-humbucking Tele (same specs as the first, just different color)

I pretty much ordered these blindly, based on DiMarzio's descriptions, a few youtube vids and what I know I generally like regarding pickups - and where I wanted to go with these Tele's. Modern heavy one and Modern PAF-style the other.

I'm not set yet if I go Breed bridge and FRED neck or FRED bridge and Breed neck on the second one - let's see.
What am I in for???

Oh yeah, here's a pic of the first Tele - probably slightly different than what is usually being done... not for the faint of heart!
The second Tele is still in the "cutting" stage of the wood  :madness:

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Virtual Vintage '54 Pro
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:28:10 AM »
May I present this little gem to you?

Seriously, I feel pretty strongly that this is one of the best noiseless singlecoils for the neck position of a Strat.
For some reason, I kept overlooking this pickup on my search through the noiseless singecoil isle.
Maybe it's the name: '54 to me implies a bright sound and general 50's music which I'm not too fond of.

Anyway, the VV '54 Pro is everything I want from a neck pickup. It has a perfect balance of warmth and brightness, meaning it's warm - yet it still has an edge.
It's a really expressive pickup. There's tons of different voicings depending of how and where you hit the note. It's very woody and a little airy, yet still has a hint of glass in it's sound especially with the right picking technique. The attack is wonderfully juicy & slightly compressed.
Where the Area '61 pickup left me with a relatively bland taste - the '54 Pro was like a big juicy medium rare steak.
The '54 Pro is perfect for any kind of Blues and Rock. I wouldn't recommend it for Malmsteen type of Shred though. You might need something a little tougher there with a sharper Alnico5 attack.
But it's perfect for any kind of overdriven Hendrix, SRV or Rory Gallagher...

Requirements:
It works perfectly with 250k volume and tone controls - but the one thing it wants is to be put really close to the strings (which is not a problem, due to the softer Alnico2 magnetic field). Close to the strings - it shines. Back it up too far, and all those qualities start diminishing instantly.

Now I need an equally great bridge pickup!
'54 Pro in the bridge anyone?
