Guitar Lounge / Re: H-S-H models? (other than Ibanez)
« on: August 11, 2012, 12:14:35 AM »
I was just looking for another brand, not another style, so Jackson would be fine. I'll check up on the Hamer and Charvel stuff, though I doubt they still make 'em (used=new for me, though).

I really don''t like what I've seen from Carvin. For G&L (or other custom orders) I'm on a $1000 total budget (before I sell my old striker). I tried to see what I'd get from Warmoth (counting in total parts/labor), and it ender up being about $1300ish.

Thanks for replies, though.

If you are in the US, I'm sure you can find some gems on the H/S/H styled superstrats pop out from time to time...

Hamer made some HSH guitars back a decade or two ago. Perhaps look out for those Diablo IIs, or even the Chaparrals or Californians...

LOL! I've never really dislike any pickup out there really. However, I never liked those Seymour Duncan JBs. Too bright sounding, and just don't care for the overall tone. Also, not really a big fan of those Seymour Duncan '59s. A bit too mid scooped for my tastes...

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: The Norton

Hmmm, I actually was considering getting a Norton installed in the neck on one of my guitars. Comes with a Dimarzio Tone Zone/ Dimarzio HS2/ Dimarzio Air Norton combination. When I have the Tone Zone set up as I love it, the Air Norton seem a little too low output compared to the Tone Zone. This is even with it being very close to the strings. I wonder if someone is wrong here...  :o

Interesting, as Joe Satriani uses that on a 22 fret guitar. Anywho, late update, but that Ibanez got traded away for an old Grover Jackson that came with Seymour Duncan Full Shred in the bridge and Seymour Duncan Pearley Gates bridge in the neck. Me likey. The Full Shred is so far the only high output Seymour Duncan I like...

I've played Floyds without a problem.

My beef with Floyd Rose systems, is that by the time I have the thing set up to play, I'm bored/frustrated and have lost all interest in wanting to play. My vintage trems get me where I need to go just fine, I don't have many tuning issues. Yeah, occasionally it may happen, but that's if I'm going SEVERELY wild. Honestly, my ridiculously bluesy bends put the strings out of tune more often than my vintage trem.

And god forbid if I'm playing a Floyd guitar and want to play in drop d...

Perhaps, but I find that both vintage and Floyds are just as hard (or as easy) to set up as one another. YMMV...

I would have thought the '54 would be the less bright if not the least compared to the other Dimarzio singlecoils...

Got a F spaced Norton installed in the bridge position of my Schecter Tele USA, in conjunction with a 36th anniversary PAF neck in the neck position. Both can be individually coil splitted. Suffice to say that the Norton is an underrated pickup, and I dig the tones. Works fairly well coil splitted as well. I dig it coil splitted and running in conjunction with the full humbucking setup of the 36th anniversary PAF neck. Very Rolling Stones like in tone... :D

Gear Closet / Re: Compression?

I guess people have to understand that each string does not vibrate with equal volume necessarily, not to mention certain double bend notes won't ring out long enough in relation of strings that are not bend or strings being picked in an open position. Thus comes the compressor pedal. I would like to grab a Barber Tone Press someday...

This "Floyd sucks tone" thing is blown way out of proportion. I bet if people did a blind audio test between two guitars, one with vintage trem and the other with a Floyd, I bet not many can tell which is which...

There are a number of decent Tone Zone clips on Youtube. Unfortunately, some of them have been deleted as well it seems...

The Pickup Place / Re: I just lowered the height of my Tone Zone....
« on: March 25, 2010, 08:45:00 AM »
Actually, it took me 20 mins during that day. But....I've had this pickup for almost a year now...Been fiddling with the height since it was installed..  :D

I got lucky with the tweaking, i guess. And it matched my current rig.

For the neck pickup, something for blues, jazz, great cleans, searing lead tones, while can still handle high gain without getting flubby or muddy.

If you like thick and warm, you want an Air Norton. It matches all of those. I'm just not a fan of its clean tone, it's a bit too thick for my tastes.

An Air Zone also matches that description.

You could also try coil splitting the Air Norton. Give a nice single coil tone...

Personally, I've tried a whole different bunch of settings, and I still prefer the recommended distance between the pickup poles and the underside of the strings by Dimarzio the most...

Oh btw, this is suppose to be going into an Ibanez 540S-LTD. The stock neck pickup is a Ibanez USA pickup F1 made by Dimarzio. It sounds fairly similar to the Breed bridge, but even darker and slightly hotter. Me no likey. It just sounds too dark, very hollow body neck pickup like. Would sound good if you are into that type of tone, but for this guitar, I would like something else really...
