May have to try one in the 'ole RG. I kind of like a5 pickups anyhow.

I have a Pearly Gates + in the bridge of my Big Apple Strat ('59 neck). I like it pretty well. It is a little different than the Pearly Gates. From what I understand it is slightly, and I mean VERY slightly overwound, but also has an A5 magnet. That being said, I have installed the Pearly Gates for many a person and they along with myself have liked it. Keep in mind that the Pearly Gates isn't for everyone, and has its own voice. If you are looking for something slightly less rude, I say go for the 36th. Another suggestion would be the Alnico II Pro from the Duncan catalog. I also like the PAF Pro in the bridge of a strat. Especially if it's an HSS. I tend to gravitate more towards hot vintage, or medium output pickups these days. You get to keep articulation for faster stuff, and let the amp handle the gain chores instead of the axe. With the gain my amp has, there is no need to hit the front end that hard.

Right now, it's the oem. I will lower it a little more. That being said, I do use it quite a bit for clean passages, usually in one of the notch positions along with either 'bucker.

So our techs all got a Surface Pro for picking up and closing out tickets. Their supervisor told them to use as few words a possible when closing out a ticket. This is the result (said technician replaced a ballast)

I am looking for something for the middle position of my RG that has a little less magnetic pull as it grabs the strings when I dive the trem. Even when I lower it, the pickup just grabs the strings and you get a nice "bam" as a result. Any ideas?

I haven't seen much on it on this forum. I was just curious of anyone opinions on it. What kinds of wood it balances well in, etc.

"X2N. Never thought I'd like such a hot pickup but got one in a used Charvel ProMod."

That pickup is probably my favorite super high output pickup of all time. Used one in a Maple Top super strat back in the 90s. It SCREAMED!!! It had none of the things I hate about most pickups with that kind of output (Lack of Articulation, Mushy Sounding, Dark). Actually one of my favorite DiMarzios. I just don't have anything right now that needs that much.

Sorry for such a late response. I even posted a "rest in peace" post on the muscle car forum I am on for Eddie. My boss called me with the news when I was on my way home. Aside from hearing the play by play when 9/11 happened, it was the only time I have just pulled over in sort of disbelief. I was only 4 when the first VH album hit. But.....by the time I was 10 and just starting to play guitar, I was already turned on to his prowess. No...genius. Even during his synth heavy years, his playing was just spot on. Then all of a sudden, in the middle of the shred craze of the late 80s, he does some country riffin' with "Finish What You Started". I will never forget the Les Paul special on, I believe Showtime. I just remember programming the VCR so I could watch it over and over again. I was just blown away.

Players like him only come around once (I mean people who truly revolutionize how a guitar is played). He didn't just influence a ton of famous players, he influenced millions of players period. I grew up with the beginnings of MTV so a lot of the time you could see what someone was doing. I could only imagine what guitarists were thinking when VH was played through a set of headphones when it was first released. There was no way to turn on your computer to see how he was doing these crazy licks. No way to turn on MTV and hope that the video director was smart enough to actually get the lead guitarist during the solo. You could just listen and hope they were coming to your town. Must have been like a magician just recorded Eruption.

Little by little, and I know some people would like to argue that "This guy is faster" or "this guy has more theory knowledge" or the list goes on when it come to armchair quarterbacks, the truly talented are passing away, and we aren't seeing their shoes getting filled by anyone. There is a hole left that I don't think will ever be filled. To me, Eddie was that unique.

Back in 2012, they came to town with Kool & The Gang. One of our guitar teachers went and recorded the entire show in his smart phone. He told me to wait for the halftime solo, I would be blown away. I was. Eddie was faster, more precise, etc., but still had the urgency he did when he was a kid. That intangible thing that hit you in the gut. After watching it, we both agreed that we had yet to see his best. With a career that spanned almost 40 yrs. at that point, that was saying something.

I heard Lynch say that to him Jimi Hendrix was playing from his soul. Listen to the solo in "Little Dreamer". If anyone can listen to that song and just close their eyes and really listen to the solo, and not feel the same way, then I would argue that they don't have a soul.

I wish I had seen the original post when it was posted. But here it is in all its belatedness.

Eddie, I know you're out there, and you are young again. You are playing guitar with the angels, and entertaining people long passed from this world. Don't just rest in peace. Keep blowing everyone's minds with your creative genius. Why stop now? You did ours for 41 yrs.

God Bless Ya' For It!!!

Oh definitely. But what can top an ADA MP1 for 80s? An ART controller with those "80s track suit" colors.

I think being in N.Y. has a lot to do with it as they got hit VERY hard and by way of that had some of the strictest Covid restrictions.   What's crazy is I just looked at a graph from the states that are the strictest to the least strict. It seems this virus is going to do what it is going to do regardless of what we try and do to prevent it spreading. That's the chaos theory of nature for you. I'll be glad when it's in our rear view mirror. I too have noticed the lack of availability and am jonesing for some new pups for a couple of axes.

I have yet to try an Air Norton in anything I own. I really need to try one and see what the fuss is about.

The Pickup Place / Re: Anyone use a neck 36th DP103 in the bridge?
« on: March 05, 2021, 03:35:08 PM »
At least on paper, it looks to be pretty balanced. What it would sound like in your particular guitar may be another story altogether. I have a breed neck that works great in the bridge of one of my RGs that is for some reason VERY dark. The brighter neck pickup combined with the lower output is just what I like about it in the bridge. As time wears on, and I get older, I gravitate more towards lower output, or slightly hotter than vintage output as my amps have plenty of gain.

I know that's not a lot of help on the 36th, but it is my experience with "sets" that the neck will be a tad brighter to compensate for the darkness of being closer to the fretboard.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: FRED
« on: March 05, 2021, 12:12:05 PM »
It's really not bad in the neck. The aforementioned Jackson Soloist that had the Fred/ Screamin' Demon combo started out with the Fred in the neck. Sounded really good. We decided to see if it would sound better in the bridge than the Seymour sh12 (Which in that guitar sounded like Fido's behind in the bridge position. It was just dull, lifeless, and really unimpressive. I have heard it sound great in other axes), and it just blew it out of the water. As far as the neck goes it gave a really nice neck soloing tone, and also sounded great clean. At least in the Jackson Soloist it did.

The thing about the Fred that I have noticed is that it really sound pretty good in, at least everything I have installed it in, pretty much everything I have installed it in. Great harmonics, nice full mids, great articulation. To my ears, it sounds much hotter than what the specs suggest.
