Title: Install Your PAF Joe the correct way.
Post by: greenlion on October 21, 2016, 11:57:30 PM
In switching pickups from one Ibanez RG to another, I was reminded of what a difference orientation makes with the PAF Joe neck pickup. I accidentally installed it backward in the cavity and it turned into a badly defined mud bomb with mushy bass and very little pick attack. (If you like the Air Norton, you might actually prefer it that way) Turning it the correct way (with the cable exit toward the upper horn of the guitar restored it to its warm, but articulate self and restored the great pick attack it has. If you have tried it before and found it dull or muddy, it could be because you had it backward in the pickup cavity.

Even though I don't have a PAF Joe this is great info. Thanks a lot for sharing.

That will be true for any dual resonance design, since the coils can be quite a bit different.

I have never found another pickup where it made as much difference as it does with the Paf Joe.

Try it with a bluesbucker or Steve's special.

How do we knox, which orientation is "right"?
I recently installed an Air Classic neck with the cable facing to the pots (which was btw the only way the fitted into the cavitiy). Don't know if it is dual res.
Now I wonder, if I might try the other orientation one day...?

The "standard" orientation is always with the cable facing the output jack.

The Air Classic is not dual resonance. It is an airbucker though.

The "standard" orientation is always with the cable facing the output jack.

For a bridge bucker yes, on any guitar, unless you want it the other way round.
For a neck bucker, it's usually the other way round. However, I see many schematics with Di Marzio humbuckers where the neck pickup's cable faces the output jack.
