The Pickup Place / Nickel humbucker covers for dual row hex poles?
« on: August 10, 2016, 04:30:40 PM »
So for a few years now Dimarzio has been offering their dual row hex pole pickups (e.g. Super Distortion) with nickel covers.

Does anyone know if they sell that style of nickel covers separately so that one might outfit an existing pickup with a cover?

Dude has a crapton (= to 2 metric butt-loads) of pickups.  Easy to imagine he moved a box and there they were.

LOL, yes. I'm sure that's exactly what happened. I snagged a neck model.

The Pickup Place / Re: Air Zone with less bass?

My experience with setting pickup height - especially for neck pickups is that you can only go low up to a point. Once you set the height below that point you lose the articulation on the low strings. With some guitars and pickups it's enough, with others not.

Cheers Stephan

Darkbluemurder is correct.

Capacitor values may be worth playing with. My solderless approach (use search function) allows you to swap capacitors in and out in seconds.

If you are looking for a different pickup that will fit this bill, try a PAF 36th bridge. On paper the AT-1 seems like it would be an Air Zone with less bass, but in practice it really is not. But the PAF 36th is the closest you'll get off the shelf for what you are looking for. Honorable mention to the Breed Neck.

Korina accentuates mids like crazy. The DLX Plus ought to be great in there.

Another vote for Super D + PAF Pro. I would put a VV 54 Pro in the middle of those two.

The Pickup Place / Re: DiMarzio Virtual P90 (DP169) - has anyone tried it?

Yes. It sounds good, but compared to a real P90 it is quite a bit warmer, and can be woofy if the height/poles are not adjusted well.

I run the Bluesbucker in series/split in one of my main guitars, and I have used it extensively in parallel. I like how bright it gets when split so I don't try to warm up that sound. But I will concur that in parallel it is still very bright, maybe a hair less than split, but not by much.

It's one of the Blaze models. Take a reading with your multimeter.

Breed Neck is my first choice with the Crunch Lab. To me it is a perfect blend of vintage and modern, and it has a nice edge and bite that is missing from the Liquifire. I think you'll love it with the CL.

Thanks for the recommendations, I really want to get rid of the hum though, I can't stand it especially with an overdrive pedal.

The DLX-90 does sound more PAF-like. Dimarzio's Virtual P90 sounds less PAF-like, but still not really like a P90. I like the way they sound, though. They can get a little boomy down low.

Fralin noiseless don't sound like P90s at all (he even admits it). Quite PAF-like.

If you want something that actually sounds like a P90 but noiseless, the best options are Kent Armstrong and Kinman. The Kents are a lot like the Dimarzio Area strat pickups. I like them, but I like real P90s more. The Kinmans are their own thing, and I haven't tried them because of how expensive they are. People say they are great, and the clips I have heard seem to back that up.

TV Jones also makes some interesting soapbar route stuff.

Dimarzio Soapbars are really cool sounding. Try one. If you can find a used one it's probably cheap.

If it was me, I'd also look for used P90s of these brands:

Lollar
Wolfetone
Gibson
Reverend (likely to be cheap, as good or better than some of these others)

I've used dozens of P90s, and all of the noiseless options besides Kinmans which are quite pricey. I vote for regular P90s, hum and all. The noiseless options I've tried (Kent Armstrong, Lindy Fralin, Dimarzio) all leave something to be desired.

It's a great pickup. Think Chopper, but a little less boisterous, and not as sharp of an attack.

I haven't used the Perpetual Burn together with the Sentient, and I don't know if there are published output specs on these, but I think a Sentient in the neck will overpower a Perpetual Burn in the bridge. Both are awesome pickups, but I suspect you might not get the best results combining them.

My choice to pair with a Perpetual Burn would be a Breed Neck. And to pair with a Sentient, I'd take a Nazgul.

I concur with pretty much everything mentioned here.

Greenlion, in my experience the Air Zone needs to be in a lively piece of wood before it will really come alive. I love Ibanezes, but I'm picturing a bolt-on Basswood job with a tremolo bridge (and all the wood missing there). I think that may be why it fell flat for you.

Sorry I haven't been visiting the forum as much lately. My wife has been leaning hard on me to stop buying and selling guitars so much, so I haven't been experimenting with pickups as much lately either. So when I do post, I feel a little like a broken record. Everything I say has been said before.
