The Pickup Place / Vanity- p'up cover colors!
« on: June 09, 2016, 02:23:57 PM »
I have an H/H Blacktop Strat I just converted to an S/S/S guitar with a new pickguard.
Black body, black pickguard, black knobs. . .
I now have 3 DMZ hum cancelling singles- Injector bridge, Area 61 (mdiddle), Area 58.
They all have white covers. I don't like the "Tuxedo" black/white look AT ALL.

Is there somewhere I can see the different color pickup covers on guitars in the real world?

I'm sure the available p'up cover colors on DMS's website aren't entirely the same as the actual covers.

The Pickup Place / Re: Dimarzio w/Duncan wiring color question

Looked at the ones I have.

Mine are either 2-con and a bare or 3-con and a bare.

Either way, white is hot and black/bare go together for ground. On the 3-con the 3rd is a red that supposedly takes it into true single coil mode (loses the noiseless feature, I suppose).

Outside of that, SD cust support might be the ones to get with for further confirmation.

It's fine. I did what I said- green hot- black ground and it's a go!

Doesn't that one have the 4-con lead?  If so, green is ground and black is hot. Tape or heat-shrink anything else.

yep- 4- con lead

thnx

The Pickup Place / Dimarzio w/Duncan wiring color question
« on: June 08, 2016, 12:49:47 PM »
I have two Dimarzio Area pickups and a Duncan STK- S1n (original Classic Stack, not the new Stack "Plus").

I just want to wire them to a regular 5-way Strat lever switch.
I know the Areas are red- hot, green- ground, blk & wht together.

What wires for the Duncan do I use?

I have the basic color comparison chart- I just wanted to know how these specific DMZs and Duncans get wired.
Thanks in advance.

The Pickup Place / Re: -leanest DMZ neck humbucker?
« on: May 29, 2015, 07:33:56 PM »
Great- that's what I was just told on the the phone when I spokebto a tech at DMZ.
Thanks buddroyce.

I'm having them send me an HfH and a FRED (using their pick up exchange).

I have a Bluesbucker/PafPro in a Squier VM H/H Jag which sounds perfect for what I like.

For some weird reason, the BB sounds thicker and muddier in a guitar thats identical except it's Alder (the VM Jag is Basswood) and it has a Strat style vintage trem (the VM Jag has a top load set bridge)

You'd think the alder body, vintage trem guitar would be brighter and clearer than the Basswood top load set bridge, but it's the opposite.

So the Alder/vintage trem Jag body will get the HfH in the neck.

The Pickup Place / -leanest DMZ neck humbucker?
« on: May 29, 2015, 12:22:24 PM »
Which one of these neck pick ups is leanest in the bass: Air Classic-EJ Custom-Paf Master-Bluesbucker- HFH?
I think the DP 103 (36th) shouldn't be on this list.

I currently have the Paf Master and Bluesbucker and they're similar in the low end although the BB might be a touch leaner.
I had the HFH a while ago and had an EJ over 10 years ago and can't recall how they sounded. And I've never heard the Air Classic.

I'd consider putting an A3 in any of these (except the BB).
However, I don't want to "air" or "de-air" any of them. I've done that to many pick-ups and also have made hybrids (even DMZ/Duncan hybrids!) and I'm done with that- I ruin them too often.

As far as pick up height and screw/slug height, the "Air" pick ups just loose their sparkle if they are lowered, like I tried with the Paf Master.
I've even messed with every combination of bobbin/screw/screw height and removing some slugs...

I'd like to rule out split coil and parallel wiring because that just confuses the issue.

So, does anyone out there have some experienced opinions on this?
And, has anyone actually tried ALL of these pick ups?

Thanks for reading this lengthy post- I'll appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
Kurt

The Pickup Place / Bluesbucker sounds different in 2 Jaquars
« on: May 28, 2015, 05:35:03 PM »
The 2 guitars are not the same, but they're very similar.
Gtr 1- Squier VM H/H Jaguar
Gtr 2- Squier Jagmaster (H/H)

Similarities:
  Jag body style
H/H (I tried  DMZ Bluesbucker in both neck positions)
  24" scale
  same neck (virtually)
  same nut

Differences:
  VM Jag- Basswood body
  Jagmaster- Alder body
VM Jag- top load set bridge
Jagmaster- Strat style vintage trem (bridge flush with body- springs all tightened)

Sound difference:
I recorded both guitars with a DM Bluesbucker (neck) DMZ Paf Pro (bridge)

Krazyness ! !
The Basswood body top load bridge Jag sounds waay clearer than the Alder vintage trem Jagmaster.

The Bluesbucker is muddier and has less clear high end on the Jagmaster.
This is crazy.  I'm not one to think the body wood has much effect on an electric guitar.
But the Bridge, neck style, scale length and pick ups account for most of an electric guitar's tone.

So I'm considering putting a top loader set bridge on my Jagmaster

The Pickup Place / Neck Bucker anti woof question
« on: May 26, 2015, 06:49:21 PM »
I love the sound of humbuckers in the neck. But I cant find one that's lean enough on the E and A strings. I've owned an HfH, Paf Master n, and a Bluesbucker (and have tried many others).  I love the BB, but it's still slightly woofy (in bass notes). I know about messin' with screw/pole height and clipping the screws flush with the bass plate- still not enough.
I also tried remove the slugs from the E and A string (leaving just the screws) on some pickups.

For the hell of it I tried a Fast Track 1- too boomy.
What hum cancelling Strat pick-ups should I consider- Cruiser bridge model (no humbucker qualities?)- Satch neck (too bassy?)- Area 61?

I'm not sure I'd be happy with a pick-up much below 175 millivolts.

The guitar is a Jagmaster.
24" scale
Bolt on maple/rosewood 21 fret neck
Vintage Strat style vibrato
Alder body (I'm not big on the "tone wood" theory though)

Any thoughts?

Ray Barbee? fellow hater of woofy neck 'buckers

The Pickup Place / Re: HFH vs Super 2 vs 36th
« on: November 03, 2014, 07:06:16 PM »
I didn't think I'd find another DMZ neck pick up that I liked better than the 36th A.
But I did.
The PAF Master.
However, I think the 36th would suit you better.
Splitting and/or putting a PAF Master in parallel would be too bright/zingy.
The 36th def has more apparent mids and is a bit more powerful.

The reason I love the PAF Master is because I play the E and A wound strings a lot (especially below the 5th fret) and I can't handle any mud.

IMO, the PAF Master is what I hoped the HfH would be- which didn't
 quite work for me.

Not having ever played through a VPAF, but should it be rereleased I'd probably buy a set. I'm more into their low-medium output pickups and am currently shooting around this tone with the PAF 36th and the PAF Joe I'm about to put in the bridge position of my new guitar. So: Yes, count me in.

I have a PAF Classic neck (see my previous post) with a Mo' Joe in my bridge. They balance really well- and when both are on with medium dirt they get this indescribably luscious vowel sound that starts to mate (right out in the open!!!) with the sustain. The awkwardness of this sonic s*x was easily obscured by the joy of the effect. The first time I laid into a hard picked note I knew it was a special combination.

I have a DP196 (it is awesome and I also had a DP197). It always confused me that when I ordered it, it was called the PAF Classic AND they had the VPFs- were these different pickups? (and if the were, how were they different) Or were they the same pick up with different names? I never could find any info on that issue.
