Hello all of you out there in pickup land. My name's Al. Have played guitar since '85 at age 11, and have been modding/ruining/improving by trial and error since I was 14.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / HS-3

I see nobody has written a review on this one. Is it possibly because there are so many newer stacked singles in the line that have more output? Maybe.

This is my experience with it. The output is VERY low. The tone is absolutely gorgeous. especially in the neck position. They are just a tad warmer, but still have a pretty nice single coil tone along with being dead quiet. Just don't expect screaming output. You will have to adjust them closer than your standard single coils, or adjust gain/volume accordingly. Or use a boost pedal, overdrive like Mr. Malmsteen, or simply adjust your distortion settings a little higher. I actually used to use this pickup with traditional style humbuckers with good results. The big trick was to not go too high output with your bridge humbuckers, adjust the hs higher, and badda boom badda bing.

It is a VERY good pickup, just a little misunderstood because of its main user. Yes he flat out screamed, but his pickups were a little weak, boosted by the od250, and into a CRANKED 50 watt Marshall.

The only thing that confused me was the super high D.C. resistance, but low output. Most pickups with a dc resistance in the 20+ range are LOUD. Anyhow, maybe someone who is more well versed in pickup winding will chime in on that one.

I put one in the bridge position of my old Washburn MG70 back in '93. With a maple top, neck, and rosewoood fretboard, that thing sounded AWESOME! di it overpower the singles in the middle and neck? Abosolutely. BUT......position 2 with the middle single coil, and one coil of the X2N sounded heavenly clean. Even though it had a HUGE output, it tracked well for soloing, and wasn't dark like a lot of high output pickups can be. It was still pretty articulate. Great metal pickup.

Bump. I REALLY dig this pickup in the neck of my maple/maple/maple guitar. Just SCREAMS with a hot single coil tone. I could not be happier with this pickup for just about anything, great for sweeps alternate picked runs, legato, and does bluesier stuff very well. My first one, and will probably be my go to neck single coil.

I would look at pickups and how loose or tight they are. I just tried an experiment with my Big Apple Strat as the Pg+ likes to squeal. Pickguard mounted pickup. I have a kamikaze with a direct mounted pickup. No squeal. placed padding in the cavity behind the pickup on the Big Apple. Conclusion? Squeal gone!

I know I didn't originate this thread, but it helped me out quite a bit. Now on to my Jackson Dinky!

The Pickup Place / Re: Guitar Pickups Sweet Spot (your experience)

I don't measure. I adjust where each pickup sounds the best, check for level volume, and then make a compromise between sound/volume level. Like others, it differs with each pickup for me.

I just put a Heavy Blues 2 in the neck of my HS guitar and love it. Even with maple maple and maple it is a very nice tone. Full but not muddy, bright, but not ice picky. No volume drop, and it is QUIET. As far as an hs-3 or 4 goes, the output is very weak. If you are mixing with a bucker, you would have to go VERY low ouput. I love the sound of true singles, but they are noisy. So your choices are deal with the noise, eq it out, or go with a noiseless design. I second the vvhb2 in the neck, w/ 500 k pots.

Cutting low end in a guitar tone is beneficial in a band setting anyway - low end is the bass player's job.

I couldn't agree more. I really never thought about eqing out 60 cycle hum. Really no different than what a soundman would do for feedback with mics. hmm....

Never tried the duncan stacks and don't have a lot of experience with Kinmans or Bill Lawrence with the exception of borrowing a friend's guitar for a gig one night that was loaded with l500s. I really dug how they sounded and cleaned up with the volume. I might have to take a look at their singles.

The Pickup Place / Re: Dimarzio vs Seymour Duncan

I have Duncan’s in some guitars and Dimarzio in others. I have NEVER had noise issues with my ‘59 or PG+. Period. I have also never had issues with my X2N, Tone Zone, HS-3s, or with my Heavy Blues II.  Something isn’t right. One thing: mMy Pg+ is more feedback prone than my X2N, as well as my J.B. that's in my Jackson Dinky. But as far as being noisy, no.

Wow! I can remember when the list was much lower than what was quoted in this thread. I just put a Heavy Blues II in the neck of one of my axes. After playing it for two hours, I thought to myself how far noiseless single coil pickups have come. I can find no fault at all with this pickup. I can remember when the noiseless line consisted of the hs series and that was it...period...
