I know that the 36th Anniversary PAF "replaced" the VPAF set, but to my ear it's a bit thicker and fatter; the thing I liked about the VPAF set is that it had a decent amount of brightness to it, yet still stayed fat, almost like a thicker Stratocaster pickup.
Post below if you'd like DiMarzio to bring back the Virtual PAF set!
-
As much as I like the Paf 36th, I do believe that they should bring back the VPaf and VHPaf pickups as well. I don't see why they can't just offer it as a custom ordered pickup. You're getting my vote on this. If I do make it to NAMM this January I'll definitely ask the guys at Dimarzio about it.
-
You got my vote! The more pickups available the better IMO. I really like the idea of just making it available as a custom shop pickup.
-
I'm in...the more options the better.
-
I agree with more is better providing there is a difference.
-
+1 on that. I'm hoping that they'd re-release the Virtual Hot Paf more than the Virtual Paf though.

It's funny you mention that... I've always been more of a VPAF guy than VHPAF guy.
Although I will say, the VHPAF does offer some sweet bridge tones, for a PAF-style pickup.
-
Bump...
Bud, is there any way we can sticky this?

Ask and it shall be done ;)

Count me in. I thought it was strange that Dimarzio discontinue what I thought was one of the best sounding PAFs on the market. Bring back both the VPAF and VHPAF. 8)
-
WHOEVER IS GOING TO NAMM NEXT WEEK! PLEASE BUG DIMARZIO ABOUT GETTING THE VPAF/VHPAF REINSTATED!
-
how about bring them back with A2 magnets instead of the A5??? I have swapped out the magnet in mine for an A2 and they sound great!! to me it sounds as good if not better than the duncan 78 model imo which will cost you $160.00
-
I actually like A5s. But once again, that's me.
-
+1 for this newbie. in fact, i'm having to special order a VHPAF right now (through Mikes Music Shop) because they were discontinued.
-
Given that Dimarzio had been the pickups of choice for the Musicman Axis guitars for Van Halen, I find it interesting that there is now a new wolfgang guitar being released. The clips that I have heard, it sounds very PAF-ish. Could it be the VPaf and VHPaf are the new pups in the new wolfgang?

I think part of the reason why Dmarzio got rid of many of their pickup lines is because customers were getting confused between several choices that seem to fit the bill for them. Maybe it might have been a lot more costly to produce that many types of pickups??? ::)

This could be true, although the Virtual PAF set was nothing like anything DiMarzio offers now. I don't think they sound like the new DP103 36th PAF at all.
-
bring them V/VHPAF'S back, I always wanted to have one in ma box of tricks if not the bridge of something special if I liked it!
-
When I ordered my last VHPAF, I asked about it going away and was told it could always be ordered.
Has anyone called DiMarzio to see if they could order one?

My distributor says I can't order it but then again that's not talking to DiMarzio direct. I'm pretty sure that if anyone ever asked for a pickup from thier back catalogue, they could easily reproduce it for you (for an extra charge of course).
-
Decline. 36th Annv. supercedes it IMHO.
Hopefully it can be orderd, but i don;lt see any real reason for the company to go in retrograde for the whim of 6 or 8 people.

Have you heard the Virtual PAFs?
-
no. :-[
-
Hi! I just installed the 36th Anniversary PAFs on my 07 Les Paul Studio. I have never heard the VPAF but I installed my p/u's with the Seymour Duncan Triple Shots and the ability to switch to "parallel" thins the sound enough to maybe give you what you are looking for. The Triple Shots also coil-split with choice of either coil. I'm not finding the coil-tapping too useful but it does give you additional tone "thinning" options.
Just a thought!
-
People, people, people... you'll only ever know what I'm talking about if you've ever tried a VPAF. If you haven't, make it a priority to try them, because they were bloody brilliant pickups.
That being said, I've fallen in love with the new PAF 36th series since, but still... the VPAFs were a damn good thing.
-
+1 vote from me :(
-
+1 to bring it back, but at the very least make it available from the custom shop!

Hi there, I have a Vpaf neck and a hpaf bridge in my musicman silhouette. They sound pretty clean, airy, and clean to me but I'd like something with more output and bite and yet retain those qualities. Do the 36th Anniversary pickups fit the bill?
Thanks.

Yes, they will. Also look at the Air Classics, but it sounds like the PAF 36ths are what you want.

How do you think these would sound in a Peavey Wolfgang?
-
Virtual PAFs would sound GREAT in a Wolfgang.
Too bad DiMarzio doesn't make them anymore.

I've been offered a set for trade. Can you explain the differences from the stock Wolfgang pickups?
-
Never played a wolfgang.
-
+1 for me. These were my faves. Still have one set. Don't think they should make any changes, just bring them back. The hot bridge model as well (don't have one of those).
-
Yes!!! Bring back the VPAFs!!!!
-
I agree with bud, bring it back along with the MULTIBUCKER,pretty please
-
I'm down :D
I'd like to give it a half air mod and see what it sounds like ???
-
this thread gets my vote! dimarzio should AT LEAST offer the VPAF anf VHPAF as "special order" like they do the double whammy, megadrive, etc ;)
-
I was told a little over a year ago that the VHPAF could be special ordered. Has anyone called to confirm this is no longer the case?
-
A belated count-me-in. More is better.
-
Larry, are you listening? Bring them back please.................................. :madness:
-
I've already posted here before, but I recently pulled out an LP style guitar i built back in 2006 with these pickups in it. I haven't played this guitar in a couple of years (belongs to my son), but played it the other day and it just kills. These VPAFs sound different enough from the new 36th ann model (which I like as well) to warrant being made again. They are just fantastic. So bring 'em back please!!!!
-
Count me in. Virtual PAF Hots were so cool...
-
Not having ever played through a VPAF, but should it be rereleased I'd probably buy a set. I'm more into their low-medium output pickups and am currently shooting around this tone with the PAF 36th and the PAF Joe I'm about to put in the bridge position of my new guitar. So: Yes, count me in.
-
I have a DP196 (it is awesome and I also had a DP197). It always confused me that when I ordered it, it was called the PAF Classic AND they had the VPFs- were these different pickups? (and if the were, how were they different) Or were they the same pick up with different names? I never could find any info on that issue.
-

I have a PAF Classic neck (see my previous post) with a Mo' Joe in my bridge. They balance really well- and when both are on with medium dirt they get this indescribably luscious vowel sound that starts to mate (right out in the open!!!) with the sustain. The awkwardness of this sonic s*x was easily obscured by the joy of the effect. The first time I laid into a hard picked note I knew it was a special combination.
-
Whoever is going to get Dimarzio to bring back the VPAF has my support. Why did they even get trid of it >:(
-
I'd chime in to bring back the VIRTUAL HOT PAF.
The 36th bridge was supposed to 'uprade and replace' it, but when I tried the 36th in the guitar I had the VHPAF in, it was both more shrill in the highs and had less balls in the lows than the VHPAF. The VHPAF went right back in.
-
As a new member, I too would like to say to DiMarzio: please bring back the vpaf set! ESPECIALLY the vhpaf.
-
Found one for sale on kijiji in ontario, thinking i might buy it and see how i like it. If im not a fan or want something new it may come up for sale on this forum. For anyone interested here is a link of r the specs that are no longer posted at dimarzio.com

You got my vote. Bring the virtual Paf line back.
-
Virtual PAF Please ! I have a MusicMan BFR Silhouette which I think has V-PAFs and wow - I just wish I could put those pickups in every guitar.
-
I tried those in several guitars years ago and thought they were completely void of personality and very fake sounding. The only one I liked in that family was the Virtual Hot PAF, and that was with 250k pots in a strat.
-
I have a VPAF in the bridge of an Epi LP Classic and it sings. I wish I could get another for the Plustop Pro I got a few months back. So I vote to bring it back too!
-
Just asked BanjoMikes, whether it is possible to order VHPAF and VPAF. That's the answer from the factory: PERMANENTLY DISCONTINUED.

That is very unfortunate. I actually prefer both of those pickups to the 36th that replaced them. Thankfully I still have a stash of VHPAFs.
-
Mike Z. sells a lot of Dimarzios, but I would not take him as the final word on this. Has anyone contacted Dimarzio and asked them to wind a pair?
They still come up frequently enough on the used market that it's not a huge deal IMO, but at some point that trickle will dry up.
-
My favorite Pickups now, i've paid plenty more of pickups of this caliber.
-
I have a Virtual Vintage PAF and a 36th ann.PAF. I can put the Virtual Vintage in any guitar and it 'll sound great. It's more articulate and more percussive than the 36th ann.
So yes! Bring back the Virtual Vintage PAF, cause it's the best humbucker I've ever bought so far. (And I've tried many)
-
I just picked up 5 virtual hot pafs and 3 dp 196 neck virtual PAFs in the last 2 weeks all brand new in the box except one..........woohoo!
-
I guess I'll post this here too. Consider this my entry into the petition!
Greetings, Earthlings! This is my second post on your fine forum. (I also started a thread if you'd like to post there)
I have a 2005 PRS Custom 24. I've owned this guitar for 10 years. It's #1 and always will be. Complete with it's matched Virtual PAF humbuckers, installed in '06. Not even the Hot. Straight up VPAFs. For nearly 10 years! At the time, I also modified the McCarty switching. Each pot is a push/pull, which puts a pickup into parallel. So there's a lot of combinations here.
I've always played another style of guitar as a backup. Usually a Tele or Ric. But I've started using a lot of alternate tunings and so I'm contemplating a custom build. Think Fano LPjr if that helps (and if not, just think LP without the maple top).
I need pickups! And Dimarzio doesn't make the VPAF anymore. What I love about them is they're balanced and clear sounding. There's not a lot of gain, which allows my amp and pedals to do the work (Skreddy Hybrid Fuzz Driver -> GGG Red Llama clone -> Catalinbread Echorec -> Allen Encore).
I've used the Air Norton in the bridge of an old Ibanez RG, and that sounds cool. But I think it might be too hot, and have too much bottom end for a mahogany hardtail. The Air Classic was the pickup I passed on way back in '06, though it's a consideration.
What recommendations do you young whippersnappers have for an old Rip Van Winkle like me?

Sign me up as well

New member here; I'll add my voice to the chorus.
It would be nice to be able to try these.

Does anyone have a virtual hot paf for the bridge regular spaced they could sell me?
just a few months ago, they said they'd make one f-spaced and had some standard-spaced. I bought a new VHPAF to replace another new one that I let a pal check out and he liked it so much he couldn't part with it. lol! when I checked back in about them this week, even the standard-spaced ones, they are just flat-out no longer available.
definitely sounds like the secondary market is the way to track them down.
-
I got a nice stash of them and I will probably let a few go soon.
-
Count me in on this petition, too!

I have been searching for a while now to try to get my hands on a Dimarzio Virtual PAF, with no luck, at least not in North America. Any advice on where to go to find them?
P.S. I just asked Dimarzio if they could still wind them, I'll post again what they respond with.
-
+1 for VHPAF (bridge) and VPAF (neck)
-
And what's wrong with Alnico 2? How can you expect to compete with Seymour without ALNICO 2.
By the way ALNICO 2 in Superdistortions makes a nice PAF like sound...

I finallly got a hold of a new old stock DP 197 that I purchased from SOUND SRL in Italy searching the internet. I have 2 SG's: a rare Gibson Elite from 1987 and an early Tokai. Both great guitars and now they both have a DP 197 in the bridge. I"ve tried Seymour JB's, Duncan Distorrtiion's, Gibson T490's, Bill Lawrence 500 XL's, DiMarzio PAF Pro and the 36th Ann.PAF ... but nothing sounds better than the fantastic Virtual Vintage PAF ! This pickup is so tight, clear, percussive and articulate that you can use it for almost any style. The thing is that you can always add distortion but you can't add clarity. With this PUP I can go from sparkling warm cleans to Black Sabbath. No squealing; these DP 197 pickups are quiet and they deliver. The split sound is nice too. THE BEST , period. Can't understand why DiMarzio doesn't make them anymore. Did they ever answer this question ?
-
I just put this together with a VHPAF and two HS3s. I forgot how good the VHPAF is.
DiMarzio used to backdoor them, but no more.

Beautiful guitar!
But I would consider putting a gold cover on the pickup to match the hardware.
Cheers Stephan

My question as well.
I tried to get them to make me some for my own custom guitars and they said they won't make them anymore, I just don't get it!!! Possibly the finest humbucker I have ever experienced!
-
This sounds like a perfect humbucker design, so sad they won't make them now:

I can assure there are a LOT more folks who are fans of the Virtual Hot PAF in particular than just 6 to 8. I am almost exclusively a Duncan user and love the VHPAF. It has been a topic on the Duncan forum as to what Duncan offered that was closest. A NOS VHPAF will bring a premium on ebay so that particular pickup has a fan base and a market.
-
I always used dimarzio pickups and I also hope the vhpaf come back, they are excellent
