Oh mighty Sith , where would YOU start? The True Velvet is in between Nita Strauss's two high output HB's in her sig' Ibby.

I would start by installing one. Trying it out for a week or so. Then try another. And so on until I’ve worked through all on hand.

Hi!

I was wondering about the polarity and the winding of Dimarzio's single coils. I already have a SD SSL-5 in a stratlike guitar, and I was planning to pair it with True Velvet pickups. So, a SSL-5 with a RWRP True Velvet should provide a hum cancelling combination, except if for some reason Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio use different polarity orientations and winding directions.

I have found on Seymour Duncan's website that the SSL-5 is south, top going. On the Dimarzio website, I have found concerning the True Velvet middle : "For technically-minded players, reverse polarity on our true single-coil Strat replacements is south up." Do I understand that the SSL-5 and the True Velvet Middle have the same polarity and winding, hence once paired they are not hum cancelling?

Besides, anyone has experience in pairing Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio single coils?

Never had any problems pairing SD and DMZ. One or two of the smaller boutique places might have a random issue

I know they have a "3dB Boost" option to better match output with hotter humbuckers, and their resonant peaks are ever so slightly different from the strat set. I wish they had some way to understand how hot their pickups are, like how DiMarzio lists the output milivolts, and Railhammer provides a "1 out of 10" scale.

Resonant peak is tricky, as not all sites list it. Duncan used to, and you can still find many of theirs is you search for the old “tone chart” that’s hidden on the page from before the site renovation.

But when it comes to output, it will be apples and oranges from one brand to another. DiMarzio has mV and Duncan listed some mV years ago... but the methods are admitted different and a 350 mV DiMarzio and a 350 mV Duncan are far from the same.

Dig deeper in to the Fishman single space pickups. The ones that come with the HSS set are supposed to be hotter/beefier than the regular SSS Strat style options.

Don’t know if they come separately or only as a set. Best thing to do is to call Fishman and discuss it with them.

The VPAF and the VHPAF and the 36th bridge are all good pickups. The neck versions of those aren’t quite as lively as I’d personally care for, but a lot of players do like the neck versions a lot and DiMarzio should take note.

The PAF Master set and the PAF 59 set were both incredibly disappointing when I didn’t think they met up to the marketing.

DiMarzio is known a little more for innovative approaches to the end result. Them trying to make a “59” the same way they did in Kalamazoo would be like me thinking I can use a microwave to cook griddle cakes like they did out on the cattle drive.

I’m not sure if Gabby is Larry’s daughter or granddaughter or niece or whatever. But she seems the most enthusiastic and should be doing more in the marketing and promotions than just social media. Some fresh blood would help out a lot.



Also, DiMarzio is the only major pickup company that I can think of that takes “customer favorite” models totally off the menu to zero availability.

I’m not traveling down that rabbit hole today. LOL.

But essentially, the custom is a revved up PAF. Hit up the DiMarzio website and look for a moderate to high output ceramic based humbucker that fits the description.

And, of course, you can call the respective tech support for each company and get their take.

A few things might be in the ballpark. But there is no equivalent.

Be the same if you asked Duncan for something like the Super D.

The Dominion is a good pickup. Consider looking at the full set.

Other options to consider can include the Illuminator set and the Titan set.

Going down to the tuning, the D Activator set might be a consideration, but based on the models you suggested you were thinking about, the D Activator set might not have as much body to it. Give it a look anyway.

Of those three choices offered in the OP, I’d personally go with maybe #2 and definitely #3

The Satch pups have always sounded like slightly modified PAF Pros, except for the Satchur8. For something a little less compressed than the Satchur8, consider the Mojotone Sledgehammer.

Of the Periphery -based pickups currently out there, the Titan set comes off to me as the most versatile.

Most of the songs that we consider benchmarks and classic and groundbreaking were made using stock gear without all the processing tricks we use today. Those guys used what they had and made the best of it with their fingers and their amps.



Also, as much as I have mad props for Pablo Gilberto, he makes anything so good.

PAF Pro is a tried and true model. I like it.

And the Bluesbucker. I also like it.

Both are workable in neck or bridge. Can’t lose.
