I just bought the lollar pickup winding book and changing any one of those things makes a different sound.

how long have you been into winding?

Been researching it heavily for the last few months and I'm going to start putting together the lollar winder around spring break

The virtual pafs are great pickups.  I think they will be great for what you are looking for.

Specs like that are only part of the puzzle. You have resistance, inductance, capacitance, type of wire used, magnet selection, baseplate material, and how the wire is laid (which affects all the aforementioned results).

This is all very true.  I just bought the lollar pickup winding book and changing any one of those things makes a different sound.

I was just referring more to them being similar in output, a5 magnet, etc.

So I went by the local guitar center today and they had a petrucci with the illuminators in it.  Holy clarity.  Reminded me of a bill and Becky xl500 but not as "metal".  A little more refined.

I coukd live with those but I thought the liquifire destroyed the Illuminator neck

This is the best boost pedal I have ever used.  Far superior to other overdrives in front of amps

Thanks for your input. Can you please describe the other overdrives you used and in what context, e.g. as standalone overdrive before a clean amp or as a booster before an already overdriven amp?

Cheers Stephan

I have used the following:

Ibanez Tube Screamer (sound tank edition)
MXR Bad ass OD (was my fav until flux drive)
Digitech bad monkey
OCD v3
Fulltone fulldrive 2

I used these all primarily as a boost to all ready overdriven amps.  As a stand alone the Flux Drive and the Fulltone were the two best IMHO

As a boost infront of a driven amp the Flux drive was champ followed by the Bad Ass OD - that had a lot of tonal options.

The Pickup Place / Tone Zone vs Gravity Storm

So, I've been doing a ton of reasearch on pickups for my JP6.  I had ordered pickups but i got a reply that that they were not in stock at my go to place so I stopped the order.

The JP6 i have come with factory special order Virtual PAFs.  While they are very good sounding pickups it is totally not what I'm after.  Typically you get the Crunchlab/Liquifire and I have been checking those out as well.  The pickups are direct mount

All my searches and pickup picker at Dimarzio keep bringing me back to the Tone Zone or Gravity Storm.

They have almost identical specs

TZ 5.0 H
     8.5 M
     8.5 L
375millivolt

GS 4.5 H
     9.0 M
     7.5 L
340millivolt

The differences in millivolts is so low there should be no real difference between the two.  Thats where the EQ comes in.

How much difference is there between the two in overall tone?

Cool, that could work.
The AN is way too dark for me but maybe it balances well with the TZ.
Let us know your findings :)

I figure I can always swap out for a PAF pro if this doesn't work out.  With the trem, basswood body and stainless steel frets I wanted to start "dark" and can move to brighter as needed.

Why dont you try the stock CL/LF combo, they work nicely in that guitar.

For me personally, if I wanted cover the styles you mention I'd go either with the Transition set or Tone Zone/PAF Pro. Both are crazy versatile and can handle pretty much everything and they sound great in basswood.

Jazz - I am really leaning towards the TZ but might try a Air Norton on the neck.

In your experience how are the high gain sounds with the TZ?  I had one years ago and had no problem but it was a very different guitar (and through a tube works td-752 combo).  Right now I am running through a Line 6 HD500x to a FRFR powered speaker or directly to a computer.

I am torn though and intrigued by the illuminators.  Others have recommended the EVO 2/Evo set.  So many GREAT choices

Thanks!

I have to second the Super D for the bridge but go with a PAF Pro in the neck

So, I finally opened up the guitar and found out what pickups were in my JP6

It was a set of Dimarzio Virtual PAFs!

While there are some characteristic I really do like about these there are FAR from the output I am looking for with this guitar.

They may go into my les paul as a change up though.

I think the Super Distortion S is a great choice for the bridge and then a Chopper for the neck

I like the Dominion bridge.

Another one that has more going on than you'd expect.

I'm really thinking I'm down to a dominion/crunch lab bridge and the matching neck

Well, that might be whats going in my JP6 then!

Dominion & Gravity storm neck

Possibly just a Dominion set then.

Torn between that route and going stock with the Crunch Lab Liquifire.  OR possibly the transition set to cover more ground.

I got the JP6 used and the owner had put some very low output PAF types in there........
