Sounds like a D-Sonic 7 is what you need.

What don't you like about the TZ?

I think what you describe can be had with pretty much any mid/high output pickup; imho its mostly your technique and amp settings. Maybe avoid the regular Evo if you don't want icepicks but apart from that anything should work.

My JP6 is a little dark and I feel that I need a pickup that will wake it up a little.  The tone zone has more bass than I want.  I like being able to add bass with my amp but right now I almost have the bass all the way down.  I have tweaked and adjusted hight and pole piece and I just am not happy this go around.
Ok, gotcha. Yeah the TZ can be a bit bassy.

Of the ones I've used I'd say the D-Activator and Norton would be great choices. There's quite a bit of gain difference between the two though so it depends on what you want.
Of the ones I haven't tried the Evo 2 and Titan looks like they could fit the bill. Maybe the Super 3 but it can be a bit dark in the top end. Maybe check out the Dominion too.

It's funny you mention those pickups.  I have been looking at all of those and the stev s special.

Norton has always been a though.  What is your take on the Norton?  I know you have used the Super 3 and the specs on that look great.  I love the sound clips I hear of the steves special.  It seems like a lot of people put a f activator in the JP6 for the same reasons I want to Change.   Frustrating.

Honestly, there are so many good Dimarzio pickups that can do that. Of the ones you've mentioned, Super Distortion should be good

What else do
You think meets my description ?  Evo2?

The Pickup Place / Illuminator, Super Distortion, or?

I have a Ernie ball JP6 that currently has a tone zone in the bridge.  It's a basswood body guitar.  While I enjoy the tone zone it's just not what I'm looking for.  I'm going to put it in an alder stray with maple n ck and it should sound amazing.

Using the pick up selector dimarzio keeps coming back with two common choices.  The Super Distortion and the Illuminator.  A near third is the D activator.  I loved the Super D in my Les Paul I had once upon a time. The Illuminator samples I have heard sound nice.

I'm looking for something that has great palm mutes, has a nice burn when picked hard and has good scream when playing lead without being ice picks.

Any thoughts or other models I should look at are appreciated.

The Pickup Place / Re: Tone Zone vs. DActivator

Wow!  You are talking polar opposites.  I have had both so here it does......

D-Act: Tight, Tight, Tight.  Clear yet heavy distortion in the bridge.  IT is going to be really bright in an alder/floyd guitar but not in a bad way (IMHO).

Tone Zone: Chunky.  Great vocal tone, once dialed in amazing harmonics.  For your guitar I think this is the better fit.  I actually prefer this in one of my guitars compared to my other that has Suhr Aldrich pickups.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.  They are dramatically different though

Glad you liked it - it's always rewarding when an experiment is successful.

Personally I would probably not worry about the output loss. The TZ has plenty to begin with.

Cheers Stephan

I might try the ceramic just to further experiment and see how it changes the low end.  I'm sure some one has done a half air with a ceramic mag mod but I can't find direct feedback in it.

I also have started experimenting with winding pickups and this is all great application and experimentation.

I do agree with the output after sitting on it over night.  There is plenty.  The open mids make it appear louder because it gains a little sear to the sound

Did the half air mod to the Tone Zone.  Took about 20 minutes and that was mainly spent finding a spacer.  What a quick and easy project.

I am shocked at how it opened up the midrange and tamed the low end. I feel that this mod is worth it.  Only bad part (to me) is the output dropped a little.  I might try either and A8 or ceramic in their next after rolling with this for a month or so.

I also found that there is not as much need to adjust the height.  Has a wider sweet spot now.  For now this is a keep mod.

The Pickup Place / Tone zone vs suhr update
« on: June 19, 2016, 10:49:35 AM »
Many of you probably remember my thread on picking new pickups for my JP6.   I ended up with a Tone zone/air Norton combo.

A/b vs my les Paul standard with Suhr Aldrich pickups the dimarzios kill it in terms of clarity and harmonics.  It even, at least to me sounds tighter on the low end.  This is playing through a line 6 hd500x into either an FRFR powered speaker or my Tracktion DAW.  I was a little shocked to say the least.  It took time to dial in the tone zone but I didn't even have to change how I eq.

Dark, medium to high output = Tone Zone or Dominion

Wanted to update on the pickups

I've had the TZ/AN combo in for a bit.  Fiddled with the height and got it to a spot where it sounds good.   I have to agree with the people who recommend working your amp/eq.  That had far more impact on tight/loose feel with the pickup.  All it took was literally turning up the high EQ.

I don't know about the unmatched coils off the top of my head but I think the PAF Pro or a Fred in the neck might be the answer.

Hi guys!

First post here! I've got myself an Ibanez RG3520 with a mahogany body and I want to replace the pickups in it. I'm not shure which ones I should put in but I really like the sound of the SD custom and Jazz that I have in another Ibanez but the don't fit in this guitar which is routed for dimarzios and i wonder if there's someone who knows which dimarzios I can get who sounds as similar as possible.
I have checked out the Crunch lab /liquidfire combo but regarding to the specs they seem to be to dark sounding to a mahogany body guitar.
Any advices?

Cheers!!!  :)

From what I have heard and read I would say te Titan set would be exactly what you are looking for.

Haven't seen that one. Sounds interesting. I've seen that Mojotone has a winder. Not sure of any differences, but might be an option.

You get the lollar plans by buying his book on winding.  The wonder you build is the same that he still uses in his shop.  It's a total DIY deal and has a cam that works as a traverse so you don't have to hand feed the wire unless needed.  The mojotone winder looks great but the cost......

There is also some plans for a large based winder and those can be really fast winds.  I'm trying to do this project for unde $150.  If not, I would buy the mojotone.  For the mojotone cost you can buy a Chinese made computer programmer winder and mass produce pickups for $200 more.
