The mini bar (off topic & misc) / Oh the joys of recording
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:12:37 PM »
So, yep, I am recording a new album. After letting my brother in law (who used to be the bassist/keyboardist in the first band I was in when I first moved here to the good 'ole ATL) hear the first track I heard things like,"Man, I am hearing SO many things for the bass track.", I caved and asked if he would lay down a bass line as well as some synth sounds (strings mainly. Of course this was at my wife's prodding). So I send him a copy that has some rhythm guitar tracks (enough for an arrangement), acoustic guitar, and drums.

A week later, no response. Two weeks later a response about orchestrating the album (which is typical of him wanting to take over something, inject his ideas, and ruin it). Three weeks later, nothing. Last Friday, as response of,"So when do you want to get together and record this song?" If you can see may face in my hands as I type this, then you know what I am feeling. So I end up having to remind him that all I wanted was a bass track and a keyboard track. I also have to remind him that this is my record. I don't know if you have met this type, but he's the kind that likes to stand on the shoulders of other people, and then take credit for their hard work. It's why we fired him from that band, and pretty much why nobody can work with him.

Moral of story? Don't do things against your better judgement. Even if that means telling your wife that her brother is a poseur.

Sorry. I am recording the bass line tonight, and moving on. Just had to vent. Even if this faux pa was my own doing by way of not listening to that voice inside me that said,"Stop! Don't touch that red button!"

Looks like I didn't even make the "after party" party.

I have wanted to try for a minute, but other things have had to take priority.

That's it! I am throwing down the gauntlet! The next video I do is either going to be with a Batman or Bane mask.  :madness:

I have it wired to be with the bridge pup on my axe and LOVE it with the humbucker. Like you said, it still has the "notch" position tone, just with more mids. I don't mind it myself, as it replaced an HS-3. It's also in a maple body/maple neck guitar so the brightness of that particular guitar sort of "evens" things out a bit. You can DEFINITELY nail that "Hiroshima Mon Amour" neck pickup tone of a certain Swede virtuoso with this one which is what I love. Articulate but fluid with enough output to hang with a dual coil in the bridge without the noise. It going in the middle position of my RG as well.

I would say try it. If you like it, you can send me the HB2 (kiddin'). By far my favorite neck single.

Enjoyed the demo and the tune, but have to ask,"Why the faceless silver surfer mask?"

I am thinking about the exact same combo in one of my axes. To tell you the truth, I have been gravitating more towards lower output humbuckers and single coils (noise cancelling). I don't see the point in hitting the front end of most amps these days as they seem to have enough distortion gain. Glad you are enjoying them.

Kahler made on that locked/unlocked itself.

Was that the Kahler "Pro" back in the day?

I like the CV and have thought very hard about putting it in one of my combos as well. That lack of gain will definitely clean up your technique. Whenever I start hearing slop in my technique I go to practicing on the clean channel with no effects. Helps alot.

I had the 90s era H&K 412 with vintage 30s and swore that there was no other cabinet. I listened back to those days and still agree. Even though I have scaled the size down due to either smaller venues or me getting older, that 412 H&K cab sounded awesome at large club stage volumes.

Agreed.  I have heard, and read many ludicrous statements that are similar to her,"I just couldn't find a guitar that suited me until I got this signature......" It just sounds so scripted because we have heard SO many people make that claim. I would agree.

The ONLY guitar that I had to modify to suit me was my Big Apple Strat because the damned thing would go out of tune when I looked at it.

I had an X2N in the bridge of an hss Washburn back in my metal days and loved the way it sounded split. Combined with the middle single it was AWESOME clean.

I agree..... if the DiMarzio pickups being discussed are older than the internet, one should be grateful to say the least.  Products evolve over time and revisiting older threads can expound and make old pickup relevant again in a different sonic context... perhaps a new genre of music and/or sonic capabilities with newer software/plug ins that were not available in years past. YMMV

Agreed. I always wanted to try a double whammy or megadrive, or at least hear something about them.
