The Pickup Place / Has anyone swapped magnets in a super distortion?
« on: November 20, 2017, 01:01:04 PM »
I have often wondered about this because i've been looking at trying it to lower the output in them but the magnet size/shape isn't typical. But i was wondering if anyone has found a alnico that is the same size and tried it, and if so what did you hear?

Well, if high output is fine with you try a super distortion. I've used them since the 70's and I am not remotely close to being alone in thinking it may be the best hot humbucker ever made. It's tight and clear with perfect balance and that kind of midrange thats transparent and chewy and has all thats good about midrange without any of the bad. Doesn't SOUND middy, but the mids are there  and deliver what mids should....body and fullness. Great great pickup IMO. Today i'm trying to go with lower output in my HSS strats but so far nothing beats the SD. I may eventually go back to it again because it's just such a perfect pickup IMO and i can deal with the higer output if i can't find a pickup that sounds as good. Only the output has me looking for something different after decades of using them. I find it hard to believe theres a better humbucker out there if you're looking for high output. The single coil split sound is also much more than just useful, it's great. You truly get a fully usable single coil sound with the jangle and all. I used that abut as much as i did the full HB mode. Do a review search and i'm sure you'll see a lot of people saying the same things i did.

Right now i'm using a duncan thats sounding really good and it may be the first pickup that may be able to replkace the Super D for me, but i haven't used it long enough to be sure. It doesn't sound better, and the lows aren't quite as tight, but it has a lot of similarities and has the lower output i want. But if i was totally ok with the higher output i would still use the super D over the duncan.

I'm not the guy to tell you, but if you want accurate replies you might wanna mention the output level you want because thats a huge detail.

Ahhh, didn't think of that, thanks. Anyone have thoughts ion the airbucker for someone looking for a HSS strat bridge HB that doesn't overpower the heck out of the singles like the 36th did and sounds much more open and transparent?

The Pickup Place / 59 or air classic for HSS bridge?

Bought a 36th but i don't like it at all, as it's much too mid heavy and ootput os much hotter then i thought. I want more of a low output HB thats not way hotter then my van zandts in my alder rosewood SSS like the 36th is. I really want something thats very dynamic and clear with no nasal quality. A good description might be single coil clarity and dynamics to some degree with the fullness of a HB. The 59 appealed to me due to being a more true PAF design unlike the 36th, but then i saw the air classic and that slightly scooped mid and similar output made me think that might be the better choice than the 59. Any thoughts?
