The Pickup Place / Re: Air Zone...Anyone?
« on: July 19, 2021, 02:41:03 PM »
I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing that the reason people mentioned wood species in conjunction with pickups in this thread was because that is exactly what the person who started the topic asked about...

Possibly. Although different woods do alter the characteristics of the pickup a bit so it's not uncommon to see folks talk wood and pickups together. It's far from the full picture as pedals and amps also affect the final tone.

Hi Walt!

Great to see you back! I wouldn't dream of getting rid of the madness icon. It's rather iconic here and wouldn't be the same without it!

New? Not much. Finally had the time to overhaul the backend of this place and give it a fresh coat of paint after I took some time off life after my second mini stroke. Hope you like how things look here! It's hard to believe we're almost 15years old! Glad to have you back man!

@DavidSchwab Thanks for sharing the photo! Maybe I've just been jaded by one too many tech startups in fancy offices but I actually love how the factory is just a plain old building next to an automotive repair shop.

The Pickup Place / Re: I'm after a very different sound

If you go with the HSS Yamaha, I'd go with a Bluesbucker in the bridge and a Cruiser in the neck. Going with the V100, maybe dual Bluesbuckers or an EJ Custom neck with a Bluesbucker in the bridge. You're basically looking for humbuckers that sound less like a PAF and more like some single coils or soapbars.

The Tone Zone is a great pickup but I think it's going to be a tad too dark for the tones you're after.

The Pickup Place / Re: DiMarzio wins double cream trademark battle

While Dimarzio may in fact have legal standing on this based on the law, the principle on which it is built is questionable. The double row of hex heads has technical merit and was truly a unique aspect of their design. Granting privilege to a color on the other hand, not so much. Are we going to let people trademark smells to? Its a slippery slope to say the least

Design patents and trademarks are a strange world. As for trademarking smells, yes it's actually possible. Been possible since the mid-90's I believe. It's not exactly easy but it's doable.

If anything I think it's done that way to ensure all the pickups are consistent with each other.

I'm not trying to discount any product or company but from a production management standpoint, the existence of a rockstar winder would indicate that there are variances in production that need to be looked at and if you think about it, it works both ways as some could also be worse than the baseline reference.

Although what is tonally better or worse is entirely subjective and differs from person to person.

What baffles me is sometimes I get people who always break the low E strings.

Thanks for sharing your findings!

Hhmmm.. Have you considered the Bluesbucker at all?
It might get you in that ball park you're looking at.

Strange that it's out of phase with the Super D but not the PAF. Sounds like either one of the humbuckers might be reverse wound or the PAF is also out of phase but you just don't notice it as much.

I'd say try flipping the wiring on the GFS single to see if that fixes the everything. Whether it would be better than the Duncan SSL-1 is hard to say but if flipping the wires on the GFS improves the sound, you'd give it a fair chance when comparing.

Congrats on the guitar! I had a M-1000 years ago and always found them to be great guitars! How much did that set you back?

If anything I think you can get away with a warmer sounding pickup like an Air Norton or a Transition Neck.

I haven't tried using an SDS-1 in the middle but I can see it working out. You can always lower the pickup to reduce the output if you find that it's too hot.

BKP has no issues doing double cream, so apparently it's either only US or too difficult to enforce elsewhere.

I guess the trademark is US only then. I doubt the folks at BKP would want to deal with the potential legal issues if the trademark extended over there.

I gotta admit. The Zhangbucker piqued my interest enough to go check them out too!
