The Pickup Place / pickup identification help
« on: October 25, 2018, 12:54:39 PM »
recently got pickup without label.

it looks like DiMarzio HS pickup. same plastic bobbin material, metal spacer that I only saw on DiMarzio pickup, the magnet stagger, white tape like I found on early 80s SDS-1. it also has white screw at the bottom like I saw on few older HS pickup.
but two things made me in doubt.

first the lead wire. it has correct red & green wire, but instead black & white for splitting option it has two black wire instead.
and the second was the reading, it read 16k. it might be still in tolerance for HS-2.

anyone can help confirming this one?

screws & slugs or hex screws?
because I just recently got double cream square tab with hex screws, I thought it was an old SD, the seller only advertised it as "vintage DiMarzio".
but then later I found it was a Super 2 instead of SD, DC resistance read 8k something.

no news about this one?

one of my favorite combo, old square tab PAF and Super Distortion.
for modern recent production, I use 36th PAF for the neck. very nice pickup.

look like DiMarzio K-10, OEM pickup made by DiMarzio in late 70s for import guitars.
brass baseplate with square tab similar with DiMarzio from that era (70s) but the corner was cut to fit the cavity.
the bobbon baseplate screws also typical square tabs DiMarzio.

K-10 basically was Super 2 with the allen screws changed to slugs to save production cost.
and Super 2 is basically Super Distortion designed for neck position.

looks interesting.
wondering whether they also went with "vintage authentic" route for creating the sounds too or only the appearance.
well I mean, DiMarzio usually came with their own modern method in creating instead of try to be as close as possible to how it was made in the old days.

ahh thank you for the info.
looked some info for discontinued virtual vintage models and found two models that has dc resistance reading about 9k.
the first edition of virtual vintage heavy blues and virtuAL 2 bridge position.
so I think the pickup I have is either of those two.

so, I got this unknown DiMarzio stacked humbucker, the type number tag has gone. only has U.S PAT. 4,442,749 sticker.
first I thought it was HS models, since the previous owner said he used it on the bridge for playing harder/louder stuff with cleaner signal. and if he's not mistaken, he said he got it on 1999.
but when I measure dc resistance, it was far from any HS models. only 9.1k on full humbucker, and very far mismatch between split coil 1.6k and 7.6k.

now I'm thinking this one supposes to be one if discontinued models. but I couldn't find any specs info for discontinued models so far.
anyone know what DiMarzio pickup I have here?

The Pickup Place / Re: Does the FS-1 work in the neck?
« on: August 05, 2016, 12:14:59 PM »
I used FS-1 for a while in neck position of 25.5" scale Jaguar-style guitar with SDS-1 on the bridge position.
it's quite nice actually if you aren't looking for that sparkle from typical Strat neck pickup.
I started as a humbucker-guy player, so I always get along with more fat, warm neck pickup sounds.

I recently installed the FS-1 in middle of a Strat because a Knoplfer enthusiastic has theory about Knoplfer used FS-1 in middle position (combined with vintage output bridge pickup) for Sultan of Swing.
and now it become my favorite. previously, I rarely used middle pickup alone because I felt it always lack of something. but the FS-1 just doing great for me, it has good roundness of neck position but with enough brightness of bridge position.
I use vintage output pickup for the neck, and the combination is great too, with plenty of quack.
while in the bridge I use SDS-1 (my current favorite bridge pickup), the combination don't give enough quack as the neck-mid combination.
so, the theory about Knoplfer using FS-1 in the middle position for the Sultan might be true. if it combine with vintage output pickup, it gave nice quack sounding.

anyway, you should try the FS-1 in neck, or even the middle, and it might be working for you.

The Pickup Place / Re: DiMarzio Custom Shop pricing?
« on: April 18, 2016, 01:00:02 PM »
Last time I ordered a VHPAF is was $69.99

But it might depend on the model. Might be best to call the office and ask.

wow, that's quite cheap, I thought everything with "custom shop" tags would be expensive.
I also didn't know VHPAF can be ordered from the custom shop. if I knew, I'd rather ordered it than wait a long time on ebay only to won it with similar price.

well I've been looking for Rick Derringer bridge model DP204 to matched the neck model I already have.
and I started to thinking that perhaps it's better to ordered it from the custom shop since I've been searching for quite time with no luck so far.
but I was afraid with the price hence I asked it first in here.
