I stumbled on to something yesterday. I have been swaping  pickups in order to make my extremely bright all maple guitar darker or more beefier.
Today my band was playing some van halen tunes and i decided to tune my guitar down to Eb like EVH. and whoaaaaaaaa
there it is. A simple cure to make your guitar sound darker/beefier. no wonder van halen albums sounded so good.
please sure any other easy tips to make your guitar beefier/darker.

Volume knob may help as well... Just need to find the correct spot — so it won't be silent.

Also — higher string gauge, and less bright strings. I tune to C# regular with #10-52 strings.

You can also change the pick type — softer material and more width. Try different constructions.

Your picking technique decides a lot. Fingerpicking gives extreme darkness...

Raising the pickup and lowering the pole pieces does the job well...

Turn up your amp.

Power Amp distortion is the best kind of distortion there is.

This...

and while I wouldn't call it darker per say, it definitely makes your tone controls much more effective, making the tone you want to hear easier to achieve.

And what to do when your neighbours start to gather around your door with pitchforks and torches?
