The Pickup Place / Bridge pickup for added warmth and output
« on: August 15, 2014, 08:10:07 pm »
I have an Ibanez Sas36fm and need a suggestion for the bridge pickup. Its a maple set neck on mahogany body, with a two point floating trem, not double locking. Would be putting a chopper middle and air norton S in the neck. Want to really add some beef to this guitar, had a SD Pegasus 6 installed and it just didnt do what I wanted. Acoustically the guitar is clear and honky but lackin the low end response, due to the bridge, is my guess.

My thought was perhaps a Norton would be a good bet, but open to all suggestions! Whats your guys thoughts :madness:

The Pickup Place / Doner Pick up options in '94 S540
« on: March 10, 2013, 08:17:11 pm »
Hey guys,

I recently picked up a 1994 Ibanez S540CG (cayman Green) with Maple board/thin Mahogany body. It has the stock Ibanez Q pickups, which aren't terrible but I have a few dimarzios floating around from guitar to guitar and, I was wondering what would be a good suggestion for this guitar to sort of sit in an 80's shred (a la Paul Gilbert/Vai/Satch etc etc etc) vein but still have enough bite to handle more modern metal areas. I would also like a wide broad tonal range to accomodate all other styles of music as well. I play through a Dual Rectifier and 412 Eminence loaded cab.

Right now I have the following pickups available to try in certain combinations, whats your thoughts?
Any other suggestions of any kind are welcome!

Tonezone 1/2 aired Alnico 8
HS2
Vintage PAF / DMZ/IBZ V1 hybrid (Paf had a broken coil)

D-sonic
Virtual Solo
Paf Joe

Airzone 1/2 (de)aired Alnico 5
Cruiser Neck, Blue Velvet Bridge (Virtual Solo/HS2)
Paf Pro

Guitar Lounge / Dimarzio OEM P3?
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:39:52 pm »
Anyone know much about the Dimarzio P3? My local store has some old dimarzios for sale, that are obviously very old, and could have been aquired any time in the last 40 years. The only real identification I can see is a P3 on the brass base plate. I have seen other posting stating its from an old Yamaha Pacifica, but I am curious as to the pickups equivalent or if none, its specs. Anyone have an insight to this?

Guitar Lounge / NGD Ibanez RG1527M
« on: September 01, 2012, 02:08:52 pm »
A few short days ago my new axe arrived. A 2009 Ibanez Prestige RG1527M, with the EDGE pro bridge. Galaxy White, which is a gorgeous finish. Maple/Wenge neck, maple board.
Came with hardcase and all the case candies for $1000. It was advertised as mint, but was very lightly played. Slight swirling and some minor hardware oxidation.

Overall, it is a beautiful guitar! The most comfortable playing guitar I own, and the most comfortable 7 string I've handled. The V77/V78 pickups, as many complain about, were not all that bad at all! But since I had just placed an order for custom black/white (black pole) Dimarzio D-Sonic/Blaze Neck, and had 2 months to wait, I picked up a crunch lab that my local store had in stock for the time being. It was a good Idea, too. The guitar screams now!

I did a mag swap on the stock neck pickup and found an A8 to really round out the neck pickup tone, I also raised the hex poles, and positioned the hex bobbin towards the bridge to get a bit clearer tone. Playing through my Dual Rec at stage volumes really gives you an idea of what a pickup can do.

I removed the tone from the wiring and put an on/on/on DPDT mini switch for the bridge pickup, allowing Series/Split/Parallel switching. I am using the stock 5 way switch for now, which gives me
B, B+N (slug coil), B+N, Neck(Parallel), Neck (Series)

Tuning has been a bit of an experiment. I usually play 6 strings tuned C F A# D# G C, or drop the low C to A#. I decided I would use the same tuning, adding a low F for the 7th string. Which required some seriously beefy strings. 10, 14, 18, 26, 44, 56, 68
Even then the 26 and 68 are a little spongy for a 25.5 scale. So I will be trying
Daddario EXL117 (11, 14, 19, 32, 44, 56) + a .074

 I currently am tune F(7th), A#(6th), F(5th), A#(4th), D#(3rd), G(2nd), C(1st), So the 5th and 6th strings are a 7th apart (Drop tuned) and the F is a fifth below A#.

It works well If your playing is mostly on the high 6 strings, and I tend to use the low F as a sympathetic string, letting it ring out as a bass note with some chords. Or even single note uses sound good, chording can be difficult since the strings are very thick and can be testy as to how hard you play them.

I really have been enjoying playing slap pop bass style licks, especially on the F, a good slap or pluck makes the guitar take on a whole new personality. And with the added range, surpassing the low G of a standard tuned 8 string, comes added possibilities.

Over all I am very happy with this guitar! It is gorgeous and fits well into my needs and playing style! I sometimes think I would have liked the RGD2027z for the baritone scale, but it isn't nearly as pretty.

The Pickup Place / Gravity Storms
« on: August 16, 2012, 12:22:16 am »
I have never been a "Signature" pickup kind of guy, but the more I stare in wonder at the new Gravity storms, and their specs, the more I am intrigued as to how they sound... I kind of want to buy a set to see how they sound, but a reported $115 each is a little steep. Any Idea when these would be available in Canada?

The Pickup Place / 7 string Neck Pickup for RG1527M
« on: August 09, 2012, 01:43:33 am »
Hey, just got my hands on an Ibanez RG1527M, and am considering pickup upgrades. I am sure I want a D-sonic, for the bridge, but am stuck for a neck pickup... Torn between the Blaze Neck, and the Paf 7. Anyone have any experience with these two pickups?

I am almost sure I will use the Blaze neck, as its got a higher output and 15Kohm dc resistance, so it will fair nicely when split. And parallel will be nice I'm sure

The Pickup Place / Airzone saved my axe!
« on: August 05, 2012, 05:12:08 pm »
Last week I received a Tonezone and Airzone in the mail, that had gotten on a trade. I installed the Airzone in the bridge position of my 91 MIJ HSH Strat with Floyd Rose. I had bad luck with many pickups in this guitar, nothing had the immediate attack, sustain, clarity, and thicker bottom end that I was seeking. Having used a Super 3, D Sonic, SuperD, D-activator and a handful of others...

Once I got that Air Zone in, and set to the right height, I was blown away... Everything I was looking for was there, in perfect balance! Immediate attack, sustain, clarity, and thicker bottom end! Being that this guitar is Floyd equipped, I found acoustically, it didnt have much for a thick low end. The EQ on the Air Zone remedies this problem when amplified, and its a great beautiful balance! Can't wait to complete this overhaul with a new pickguard, Blue Velvet middle, Paf Pro Neck and some custom wiring! She will be a beauty!

As far as the Tone Zone goes, it isn't perfect for me right now, I have some tinkering to do as far as pickup height before I find the sweet spot. It is interested to hear the slight differences between the TZ and AZ, can't wait to get my hands on the Paf Pro's that are on their way, and compare them all, being that they are all from the same family.

The Pickup Place / Pickup Modding! Success'! Mag Swap + more
« on: July 29, 2012, 05:29:00 pm »
So I figured it would be worth a shot to cram as much USEFUL information into one thread as possible in regards to modifying pickups! I have been having alot of fun with mag swapping lately and have found some great outcomes, and am planning to continue to do so with some used pickups I have coming. So lets make a handy "go to" thread for those DIY'ers and perhaps give some insight into great ideas for pickup mods!

The Pickup Place / Dimarzio 8 string PAF
« on: July 29, 2012, 12:51:16 am »
I just noticed on Dimarzio website, they list in their line of pickups that they offer a PAF 8 string pickup, but it isn't featured on the site under 8 string pickups. Any 8 string players on the forum?

Guitar Lounge / Whats the deal. . . Ibby 7 String w/ Maple Board
« on: July 26, 2012, 11:20:38 pm »
I am rather peeved that Ibanez has not offered a Maple Board 7 string in quite some time. I am a maple neck/board fanatic, love strats, teles, RGs, and just about anything if its got that blonde board! I know there are many guitarists who feel the same way, so why is it that the only 7 string guitar Ibanez has done in the last decade or two was released in LIMITED QUANTITY? The RG1527M had 10 items in Canada alone... And I for one cannot find one anywhere... Tisk Tisk Ibanez... You are letting me down. Seems I need to go to Carvin or Craft my Own....

The Pickup Place / P/U Mods - Whole Aired/Half Aired PAF Pro!
« on: July 21, 2012, 02:35:57 pm »
So with much pondering, I have thought about an Air Zone/Paf Pro combo in a MIJ Super Strat

Poplar Body
1 Pce Maple Neck
Original Floyd Rose
HSH Configuration

Being that the two humbuckers are not so far away from eachother in output, but miles apart in DC resistance, It makes me wonder how they will balance eachother, given the string vibration is far louder in the neck position that bridge. I know their respective EQs will be great together. After all the Tone Zone was made to have that "awe" vowel sound, like the paf pro, with more push and power. And the Air Zone is just an adaptation of that. They are both from the same gene pool.

I have pondered Airing or Half airing the paf pro to match that same "air" quality as the AZ, and drop the output slightly to maybe make a better balance.

Has anyone tried to attempt this? If so, what was your findings?

In my endeavors I have found some pickups lend themselves well to Half/Whole Airing, and magnet swaps, and some just dont work well at all...

Any insight at all will be much appreciated!

The Pickup Place / New Pickup Day - Twang Kings!
« on: July 19, 2012, 11:06:33 pm »
So after much debate i finally decided I would go for the twank kings in my tele! I bought this Squier Classic Vibe, Vintage Blonde, for $175 (cdn) brand new! Because the store had a shipment of squiers that had faulty pickups, they had waited to long for warranty, and decided to swap part for part and get a whole guitar out of it. I came along, just in time, to snag a Tele, mint shape, slight birdseyeing in the neck, at a screaming price! Went for a tele short bridge, like GE Smiths, and Twang King set. They sound awesome! Just what i was going for, a bit vintage with some extra bite, clarity, a modern touch. I had originally thought i would go all out with this guitar and make it a tone machine with HSH and switches... but decided i had enough of those kinds of guitars, and needed something with some "vintage" flare... This is it. It will see some modifications and im sure my tastes will come to change, but for now, very happy with these pickups! Will post more, in depth, once i become more familiar with them!
