The Pickup Place / Medium to high output dark sounding bridge pickup
« on: April 04, 2016, 09:09:21 am »
Hey guys. Was wondering what you guys might be able to advice me with based on the thread title. I have a Dimarzio Crunch Lab installed in one of my Teles. However, it's still too high output for me, even with me backing the pickup away really far away from the strings. However, I do like how the higher strings sound rather rounded off, and not bright like some other pickups do. Let me know your thoughts

The Pickup Place / Need Thoughts from you Dimarzio experts...

Hey mates. Just wondering what are you thoughts on this. Recently I installed a Dimarzio Crunch Lab in the bridge position of a Telecaster with a six saddle bridge configuration. I have it wired to a single 500k ohm volume pot, Dimarzio of course. Have it wired to a three way blade switch, whereby it toggles between series humbucking, inner coil split, and lastly parallel humbucking. Quite like the sounds I'm getting, especially the parallel kinda simulates that clucky country picking tone.

Anyway, running a single volume does lead to the pickup sounding rather bright. Perhaps it's only normal when you have a single volume. A little bit strange to me as the pickup sounded rather dark and smooth in a EBMM JPX that I had tried a while back. I think I can live with the brightness, but a darker sound wouldn't hurt I guess. More crucially, I was thinking what are your opinions on another Dimarzio pickup that has similar tonal qualities to a Crunch Lab, but with less output for slightly better dynamics. I guess it would work very well if my Telecaster had a neck pickup, then toggle the inner coils of both pickups for cleans ala John Petrucci, but my Telecaster only has a single bridge pickup rout, and I would like to keep it that way.

Your thoughts are much appreciated. Enjoying my new Telecaster/Esquire right now  8)

When I use a FRED in the bridge with heavy overdrive or distortion and the high strings picked hard, the pickup seems to emphasise the high end/upper midrange even more so than say picking softer?

Hey guys. Just starting up a general discussion about the Dimarzio FRED. Please share with me your experiences. I have a Dimarzio FRED installed in the bridge of one of my superstrats. Just wondering based on the vast knowledge on here, is there an alternative Dimarzio pickup that may have a slightly different tone to the FRED? I was thinking if there is a pickup that has less of an exaggerated harmonic content. I'm quite happy as it is, especially the brightness of it pairing well with a Dimarzio Humbucker from Hell in the neck, but curiosity bites hard  ::)

HOLY CRAP! The Humbucker from Hell with the clean channels sounds really stratty on my guitar, then when you engage some burning gain, it's an all out rawk tone. Pairs really well with the Dimarzio Fred too. The Fred is just classic PAF Pro with more growl and roar. Very happy with the pairing. Also installed a push pull on the master volume to get coil split tones. Humbucker from Hell split just sounds like its own humbucker tone, but less low end and the added hum. I just decided to split it because I wanted the volume to balance well when paired with the Fred coil splitted as well

The Pickup Place / Good pickups to pair with Humbucker from Hell

Need advice guys. What would be good in the bridge position to pair with a Humbucker from Hell in the neck? Preference wise I would like something that sounds more balance EQ wise. Granted, having drastically different tones can work, but it's just not my preference for my next "project" guitar. Thanks in advance

Just trying to get some opinions here. For those that have used a Tone Zone/Air Norton combo, have you ever noticed that the Tone Zone is like louder and/or gainier than the Air Norton? More importantly, have you ever felt that volume balancing was an issue to you???

The Pickup Place / Polepiece design question...

If I'm not mistaken, people had mentioned to me before that polepiece designs (Dimarzio hex vs. regular coil and slug) are not interchangeable. Anyone care to explain why this is so???

Wonder if any of you guys know what a good strat set would be to try and cop more of that Eric Johnson tone? On his first prototype signature strat, he did install a HS-2 in the bridge. But of all the Dimarzio single coils, it's the lowest output single coil there is. I wonder what would pair that with the middle and neck...

The Pickup Place / Rob Caggiano signature pickup(s)???

The Pickup Place / Dual humbucker recommendation for Tele...

Hey guys,

Bought this a two days ago, and I'm thinking of replacing the pickups. Not that they are bad, but I think it could be better to suit my needs. First of all, some pics...

Now on to the pickup recommendations. Yes, the bridge pickup is an aftermarket Dimarzio PAF Pro. Nice sounding, but not high output enough for me to get what I want, and the non F spaced is kinda annoying cause the high E string sounds softer than the other strings most of the time. I was actually thinking of a F spaced Dimarzio Mo' Joe in the bridge, and then paired with a Dimarzio PAF Joe in the neck. However, the tone I would like to get is more of a higher output PAF tone from both humbuckers, but when they are split, they can do classic Tele tones the best you can get out of split humbuckers. Anyone willing to give some pointers on what would work???

I think I have yet to share my amp rig pics yet. Here they are...

I do have two other amps that are not in these pics. One would be a Marshall TSL602 combo that I've handed over to my younger brother, and lastly, my first practice amp, a Laney Hardcore Max 30R. I swapped out the KH2 module as stock in favour for an XTC module. Still have the KH2 module in my possession though. You can clearly see the middle slot on the Randall head being different in both pictures...

My 2003 PRS that has been with me for 6 years and a bit, but this time, got my mate to take out the stock neck pickup and installed a Dimarzio 36th anniversary PAF neck. Boy, what an awesome pickup. Even balances well with the stock Tremonti bridge pickup. Awesome PAF tones. I rest my case...  ;D
