The Pickup Place / Suhr Doug Aldrich bridge model = WOW!
« on: July 14, 2015, 08:11:13 pm »
I had an Al DiMeola bridge pickup and traded it to Budd for a Suhr Aldrich that he had lying around.
Budd, THANK YOU.

Doug Aldrich is one helluva player. (A friend of mine recommended Doug to Mr. Coverdale for the Whitesnake gig.) Now, Doug's live sound with Whitesnake never did it for me, BUT I kept hearing people rave about this pickup, so I started checking out YouTube clips, like these  badass clips by Mark Day:

IN A GIBSON LES PAUL STANDARD:

Here's Mark's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzB53Tox-xhRLnJX35pkT-A

Well, after hearing these clips, I wanted to try one out.

Now, I have some pretty bad health issues, one being carpal tunnel, so I need a very sensitive pickup that easily gets great pinch and tapped harmonics. I was really tired last night when I put the Aldrich into my 80's Kramer with OFR. I did a piss poor job of wiring, I just wanted to get it into my main guitar to see if it was a keeper. OH, YES, IT'S A KEEPER. I didn't even adjust the height. It's about 1/4" away from the strings, but even that far apart, the harmonics are NUTS. I got some good sounds out of it, and went to bed.

Plugged back in this morning, played with a few settings on POD Farm Platinum, and.... OMG.... NIGHT AND FRIGGIN' DAY. From playing it the night before, I already liked the Aldrich, but today after playing around with settings, etc. I'm effin blown away. If you haven't tried one of these, I suggest that you do. The Aldrich has instantly joined the ranks of my top 5 all time favorite humbucking pickups. (BTW, I still haven't adjusted the height. because it sounds too damn good where it is, and it does everything I want a bridge humbucker to do. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?)

I'm in love with this thing. Don't get me wrong, I fly the DiMarzio flag proudly, but Suhr has created a real classic here.

BTW, If you love early VH, this thing is SICK for copping similar tones. The Aldrich says "Hey! I got yer old school wicked VH tones right here, pal!"  :madness:

THANK YOU, BUDD!

The Pickup Place / How do I do the 'Air' mod and what does that change?

Hi everyone,

How do I do the 'Air' mod and what does that change? I have a pickup that I like a lot, but am hoping to get better pinch hamonics out of it. Best regards!

From Bill's website:

"With great sadness in our hearts, the man we know as Bill Lawrence in the music industry passed away on November 2, 2013 at approximately 9:20AM.

Bill was a strong and courageous man. Even in his last few days, Bill fought to live. He'd talk about Music, Pickups & Guitars -- and Life, and we, at his company, were still working because this is what Bill Lawrence wanted to know -- that his company & legacy is carrying on as usual.

We will miss the Bill Lawrence Mighty Force. Bill brought so much, and he wanted to stay here on earth to keep giving. One thing, yesterday as preparing the necessary paperwork, required is Designation of Race. In Honor of Bill Lawrence and his wishes, we included Human.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday 11/8/13 at 3:00PM Fairhaven Memorial Park 1702 Fairhaven Avenue Santa Ana, Orange County, CA 92705 -- 714-633-1442

 Love, Becky"

I spoke with Becky today, and she told me that they wound pickups next to his bed almost right up to the end. Bill loved it!
:-)

Rest in peace, Bill! CHEERS and THANK YOU!  :)

The Pickup Place / Magnet question - How can I determine magnet type?
« on: July 29, 2013, 08:14:38 pm »
Hi everyone,

I bought a Tone Zone from the Duncan forum. The seller told me he had put an A8 magnet into the pickup. Normally, I don't like the TZ, but I decided to try it because of the different magnet. He also sent the stock magnet with the pickup. From everything I've read, an A8 magnet has super strong string pull. Well, this pickup has VERY LITTLE string pull. Anyone here know how I can have a magnet tested to determine which type it is? I LOVE the way this TZ sounds with the different magnet. I want to determine the magnet type so that I can buy a couple more of them. Thanks much!  :madness:

Tonefully yours,

The Pickup Place / Ordered a set of Breeds. :-)
« on: June 30, 2011, 06:19:39 pm »
After checking out a bunch of YouTube clips, I decided to go with a set of Breeds. I think I made the right choice. I'm planning on wiring the neck p/u to work in series or parallel. They're going to live in my Candy Apple Red Yamaha Pacifica 721. Both pickups are F-spaced and RED!

I'm told they have to make that set up as there aren't any in that color ready to ship, but that's fine with me. I'll happily wait. I'm stoked!

The Pickup Place / Anyone tried an Evo neck in the Bridge position?
« on: June 22, 2011, 09:30:36 pm »
Hello everyone,

Anyone tried an Evo neck in the Bridge position? Can you let me know your opinions (in detail if you feel like it) about it's sound in the bridge?

My guitar is a Yamaha Pacifica 721. Alder body, maple neck w/rosewood fb, and a floyd rose.

Thank you!

Hi everyone,

I just scored a Yamaha Pacifica 721 on eBay. (Alder body, maple neck, rosewood board, Floyd Rose trem.)  :madness:
It won't be here for about 5 days, and I'm going NUTS waiting for it! LOL The previous owner installed a set of Evolution pickups in it. (DP158 & DP159) What do you like and dislike about these pickups? Thank you!
