The Pickup Place / Re: PG-13 Middle in Bridge

I am not Ray but I have used the DP-240 in several guitars and still do. It is not wimpy by any means and holds up well with any medium output humbucker in the bridge.

Cheers Stephan

Hi Ray, I'm thinking about pickups for my SG. Do you think that the PG-13 Middle would go well with the older DP240 Vintage Minibucker in the neck? I remember you raving about it.

The Pickup Place / Re: Pickup similar to AT-1

Coming back to that dual hum tele with the AT-1 in the bridge. I asked the DiMarzio tech support what they would recommend if I wanted something with more bass punch and overall clarity. They suggested the Norton. Found one used, put it in and sure they were right but it slightly overshot to the bright side in that guitar. But then I remembered RayBarbeeMusic's post that the usual load of 500k should be reduced to appr. 380k. That provided the midrange bark that I liked about the AT-1 which the Norton was lacking with the 500k load, but now coupled with the bass punch and the bite of the Norton. About the same output as the AT-1 with a load of 500k. Love the guitar now.

Many thanks to the DiMarzio Tech Support for their assistance and Ray for sharing his knowledge.

Cheers Stephan

Those older PRS Santana SE's sound great after a pickup swap. I have the Duncan Seth Lover set in mine, and it sounds more like the classic "Gibson" PAF tones in my head than either of my actual Gibsons.

The 36ths replaced the vpaf/vhpaf set.

I'd go with the 36th neck.

Paf joe is lighter on bass, and slightly hotter.

The Trading Post / LTB: Gold hex pole pieces

I'm looking to swap out the black hex lugs in my Gravity Storms for gold and it seems Dimarzio no longer sells parts.

Can anyone help a brother out here?

You can use a standard sized spacer in an f-sized pickup and vice-versa. However the keeper bar is a different story, unless this is the part where the file in the previous post comes into play(?).

That said, if the slugs are tapered then they will need to be replaced.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: DImarzio Area Magnet Swap

DCR is far from the be-all-end-all but the spec of the Solo is pretty close to that of the Injector Bridge which uses A2 slugs. I’m assuming the same gauge(s) and a similar ratios. It may also be that the Injector has more metal within the coils (by way of the Virtual Vintage tech) in order to boost its output, but this is entirely speculation on my part.

Seeing that you’ll likely damage the coil(s) by removing the slugs, a custom order would be your best bet. I’d get in touch with DiMarzio.

If they are constructed in a similar way as normal single coils where the winding is wound around the magnets then a swap is not possible. But I never attempted to change magnet rods in a single coil.

Has anyone ever done a magnet swap in an Area pickup? I would like to know what the Virtual Solo sounds like with Alnico 2 poles. Thanks!
