The Pickup Place / Air a Norton or unair an Air Norton?
« on: August 01, 2018, 10:14:47 AM »
I'm looking to try out a Norton or Air Norton but in order to keep my options open I was wondering if it would be easier to air a Norton or unair an Air Norton? I know about the half-air mod and while I might end up doing that as well I'm focused on the two extremes.

The Pickup Place / Bluesbucker brighter than 36th Ann PAF?
« on: May 21, 2018, 12:20:36 PM »
I'm thinking about switching out a pair of 36th Ann PAFs (bridge and neck models) for a pair of Bluesbuckers because I've got too many guitars with PAFs. I want something different but in the same vintage category and not a PAF.

I've already got one guitar with EJ Customs and I've owned a guitar with a Humbucker from Hell so I'm not going there on this guitar.

On paper, the Bluesbucker seems brighter so I'm just looking for validation of this. Assuming all things are equal (same guitars, some pots) is the Bluesbucker perceptibly brighter than the 36 Ann PAFs?

The Pickup Place / How does the Chopper fair when split?
« on: March 06, 2017, 03:11:41 PM »
I've got Choppers in the neck position of a couple guitars and before I go replacing volume pots and rewiring them I was hoping some folks could chime in with their experiences on how they sound when split.

The Pickup Place / 3 Humbucker wiring with vol and 3 way toggle?
« on: February 23, 2016, 02:25:45 PM »
I've got a guitar that I recently put EJ Customs into and I'm really digging them so I'm considering adding a 3rd one in the middle. I'd prefer to prefer to keep the control as simple as possible while allow for as many pickup combinations as possible (within reason).

The controls on the guitar right now and just 1 volume control and a LP style 3 way toggle. What I'd like to do is change the volume control to a push-pull that actives the middle humbucker but I've yet to find a wiring schematic for this on Dimarzios site or anywhere else.

I know I can contact Dimarzio to see if they can hook me up but I figured I'd try here first.

Thanks.

The Pickup Place / It's about time...
« on: November 13, 2015, 03:21:33 PM »
....to wrap up some projects I've had sitting in my closet for the past few years. These pups are going to finally have homes.

The 36th and EJs are standard but all the single coils have flush magnets while the cream ones on the right have no flange for a TITE route Charvel style body.

The Pickup Place / Preferred volume pot value for Bluesbuckers?

Just curious what volume pot values folks are using with Bluesbuckers.

Please share.

The Pickup Place / 5 way for Direct Mounting?
« on: October 06, 2015, 09:50:10 AM »
Hello folks, I'm finally getting ready finish a project I started a while ago and one of the things I need is a 5 way switch for 3 singles coils. I don't need any fancy wiring options but what I do need is a switch that will work with direct mounting to the body, not a pickguard. I also want to be able to use a cream switch tip, to match the cream pickup covers.

So far I've look at Dimarzio and Stew Mac options but I'm not sure which ones will work for this scenario. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Pickup Place / Brightness of 36th PAF vs Norton?
« on: July 15, 2015, 08:54:54 PM »
Can anyone share their experience with the brightness of the 36th PAF bridge compared to the Norton? I normally run the PAF with a 500k volume and no tone control and also have few guitars with the Tone Zone as well. I'm thinking about running a Norton as a compromise between the two.

The Pickup Place / HSS Wiring Question
« on: June 10, 2015, 04:16:41 PM »
I'm planning out some new pickups and I'm looking at a 36th Anniversary PAF with two Area 67s. What I want is effectively a 500K volume on the PAF and a 250K on the Area 67s. In the second position I will be splitting the PAF with one coil from Area for the Strat tone with hum cancelling.

My first though was to use two separate volume controls but I don't really need that. What I have read here is that some folks wire in a resistor so when the switch is in the relevant positions (2-5) the pickups basically see a 250K load.

Any advice here would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Pickup Place / Gauge of wire for pickup connections?
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:06:43 AM »
I need to get the proper sized wire strippers for the wire used for 4 conductor pickups. To be clear I'm referring to the wires from from the pickup that need to be stripped for the pickup's connections.

I prefer to have the proper tool and not half-ass it with melting the insulation off.

Thanks

The Trading Post / SOLD - PGM301 "Chili Pepper"
« on: May 06, 2015, 07:51:02 AM »
SOLD

I'm looking to sell a PGM301 that was refinished by Sims Custom Shop (the one in the US) in chili pepper fabric (same method used on the Jem 77FP). The refin job cost about $750 and the final result is excellent.

Besides the refin I replaced the factory bridge and tuners with black versions (both Gotoh, like the stock ones) because Cosmo Black wears off too quickly for my tastes. I also changed the pickups to a Dimarzio 36th Anniversary bridge), Dimarzio Chopper  (middle) and Dimarzio Humbucker from Hell (neck). I'm also including the original single coil (Ibanez ISCV-1) and red and green Dimarzio Tone Zone. The stock strap pins have been replaced with Dunlop strap locks and I'm including a custom  strap made from the same fabric used on the body. Original factory case is also included.

Overall condition is excellent save for a "ding" on the upper rear edge where your elbow goes. I've done my best to show this in the pics and it looks far worse in the pics that it really is. The frets are in excellent condition and have no perceivable wear. I've got a few guitars and I rotate between them. Currently set up with 9s and plays great. I've been meaning to put this up for sale for a while, to make room for other guitars, and finally got around to it.

Price is $1200 (shipping and insurance included) and I accept USPS money order or PayPal for payment (surcharge applies). Not looking for any trades. Please note that I only ship in the continental US.

For reference my eBay name is toneboy2000 and I have a perfect rating of 144.

Here's a teaser pic for you and more pics can be found here.

Any questions let me know and thanks for looking.

I'm looking to try a pup that's somewhere between the 36th PAF and Tone Zone and I think that would be a Norton or more specifically a half-aired Norton.

The output level on the PAF is fine and I'd almost lean towards the Air Norton but it seems like a lot of folks don't like it in the bridge. I really like the 36th PAF but I'd like something with a little more oomph and midrange.

Based upon that should I just get a Norton and half-air it or just get an Air Norton? Again bear in mind I generally like the PAF.

Thanks.

The Trading Post / SOLD: Ibanez PGM301 "Jester"
« on: May 01, 2015, 11:11:34 AM »
SOLD

I'm looking to sell a PGM301 that was refinished by Sims Custom Shop (the one in the US) in a graphic I designed called "The Jester". The refin job cost $800 due to it's complexity but the final quality is excellent.

Besides the refin I replaced the factory bridge and tuners with black versions (both Gotoh, like the stock ones) because Cosmo Black wears off too quickly for my tastes. I also changed the pickups to a Dimarzio Tone Zone (bridge), Dimarzio Pro Track (middle) and Dimarzio PAF Joe (neck). The stock strap pins have been replaced with Dunlop strap locks and I'm including a custom made "matching" neon green and orange velvet strap. Original factory case is also included.

Overall condition is excellent with no chips, dents or dings on it and the frets have no perceivable wear. I've got a few guitars and I rotate between them. Currently set up with 9s and plays great. I've been meaning to put this up for sale for a while, to make room for other guitars, and finally got around to it.

Price is $1300 (shipping and insurance included) and I accept USPS money order or PayPal for payment. Not looking for any trades. Please note that I only ship in the continental US.

For reference my eBay name is toneboy2000 and I have a perfect rating of 144.

Any questions let me know.

Here are few pics for your viewing pleasure.
